Ticking/clicking noise?
Hey guys,
What would cause a ticking/clicking/slight rattling noise when the bike is running? Bike has just shy of 15,000 miles. The sound is more prominent at lower RPMS, but that might be just because there is less ambient noise. Also, seems it only really happens when bike is under load. So, it's pretty bad at lower RPMs and going about 20mph. I'm about to do an oil change and see if I hear a change. |

Valves? They should have been checked and and/or adjusted twice by now with 15k.

Yea, I was thinking valves too. Previous owner said he checked/adjusted the valves back when he should have. I need to check them soon. Do you think it can wait until winter? Or do I need to spend a weekend and do the whole 15k service soon?

I would say soon but I will also say that I have seen this engine go 40k miles with no adjustment...
Personally I did mine at 10k and I'll look at them again around 20k unless I hear anything unusual.

I admit the first time is kinda rough. Once you get in there and have a better understanding of what your doing then the stress level comes down. Second time should be breeze. Some of the DIY's I've seen have you taking all kinds of parts off like the radiator and engine mount.... I found that to be unnecessary and time consuming. Take as little off as you need to get your feeler gauge in there.

Yea....I just don't want to do it either. I'm planning on running it down to the beach not this weekend but next. How bad would it be to put ~500 miles before checking?
This is what I'll probably end up buying: http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Cams-Valve.../dp/B000WJWTM6 |

I did my 1st one in about 5 hours but of course I had to stop to get my shims. The trip was probably an hour of that time. With shims in hand and focused on the job at hand, I think it could be done in under 2 hours. Of course your tool selection and your confidence and skill level will be factors. I'm pretty comfortable taking the engine apart.

500 more miles will set the self destruct feature we have off. It will blow it to smithereens.
J/k... it will be fine.

umm that doesnt sound right. I had a similar sound on my DRZ and it turned out to be a shim split in half. If the bike still runs, stop running it any more. Take the head off and inspect the shims/buckets. (Turn the bucket upside down and notice for visible indention)

It's done it for like 500 miles so far, but gotten worse.... Quote:
In other news, the bike was hard to start yesterday when hot, and popped. It then started right up. New symptom of the valves being off or new issue? |

We'll see on chilling. Probably won't be able to. My brother is in town from Germany, so this is a family get-together at the beach. Haven't seen him in like 2 years, so I'll probably be sticking with them lol. |
