New Addition

I still have my Ninja 250 and I probably always will. I've ridden liter bikes, 600's and everything in between and nothing comes close to comparing to these little bikes.

But however... Doesn't mean I won't add to the collection.

Introducing: 2003 Suzuki DR-Z400SM.

It's a piece of junk, I'll give you that. I'm not too worried about it though as she will be super shiny before long.

The back story: My business partner and I have been buying up bikes, fixing and selling them. Unfortunately he's been keeping a couple of the bikes so I can't sell them. Either way he ended up keeping a 2007 Suzuki DR-Z400S. He wanted some 17" wheels to do a motard conversion so he put me on the lookout. So I found this '03 DR-Z400SM for LESS than the price of new wheels and guess what? It included them.

So I go to pick this bike up thinking it was a regular DR-Z400. I was shocked to find out it was an SM. The owner had no idea what he had so I didn't tell him.

Brought it back to the shop for my partner to look over. I hadn't told him yet that I had decided to keep it on the basis of "lost revenue opportunity" because he kept some of the bikes I was to fix and sell. A few minutes of pouty eyes and shame let him know what my plan was.

Essentially I got this bike for free as in I had no money out of pocket. She needs some parts and that will add up to about $400 and of course a lot of labor. Still trying to decide on a paint scheme. I'm thinking black and gold or black and pink.

Nice! Looks pretty rough but since it's a DRZ you shouldn't have any problems getting it fixed up for cheap. They are basically bulletproof and have remained unchanged since their introduction.

Is this your first SM? They are a blast to ride, just have to hold back the temptation to drive on every sidewalk and grassy areas that you see.

I was messing around on an XT225 which had like 15hp. This will be more than double the HP. I took every opportunity I could to go on the sidewalk and jump curbs with the XT.

Here's to another Reckless Driving ticket!

I really want a DRZ to replace my KLR off road, but then I need to buy a V-strom as well so I can do longer rides. I guess I should just keep the KLR lol

I'll get you guys a build thread. I found out LTZ400 parts might work so I picked up a free carb.

I'm waiting for the title situation to get cleared up before I start spending any major money on it.

I've got an infinite supply of track take-off tires so the main things will be title, stator, carb, cdi, starter and rectifier.

Not sure which parts work and which parts don't but I hate electrical issues so I'm just going to replace it all.

So with Ninjette being down I was forced to work on my bike. Took the valve cover and side cover off. Guess what? Turns over smoothly and is in time! W00T!!

There is no refitting the stator. It's done. I need a new one. The rectifier checks out good. The ignition switch is missing so I need to find a way to wire that together.

Hopefully all it needs is a stator, carb and some elbow grease. I plan on taking her to my next track day!

I ordered all of the parts I *think* I need.

Carb, stator and shift lever. I guess I'll have a busy week as the parts come filtering in. I'm pretty excited.

I didn't get to work on it today because I'm parting out an F4i. I want that freaking thing out of my life!!!

Well... that didn't take long. Got all of the parts today and put them on. Tried to turn her over and it seems like the battery is not quite up to snuff because the starter will spin but it doesn't sound like it is engaging. So I threw it on the charger. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have some free time to mess around.

Will upload pics later. Until then here is a bit of dirtbike action from last weekend for ya'll

Doesn't seem like I'll have free time tonight because I have to part out this **************************************************************************in F4i. Good news is it looks like the profits will be paying for as many tires as I can burn through...

Here's some pics for you lovelies. Truthfully will be surprised if she fires up and starts thumping around. Finger crossed.

I plan on getting her going a riding it and during the cold months I'll probably replace the plastics and clean/paint everything.

I totally have not been working on my bike I believe all it needs is a jet kit and for me to actually press the start button.

I did pick up some Metzler Racetec slicks but I'm contemplating on seeing if anyone on here might want to trade regular street tires for them. Or maybe some off-road 17's as I have been riding mostly off-road lately.

Anywho I do promise to keep you guys updated...if an update ever comes along...

Roger @EsrTek

I was messing around in the garage yesterday and noticed I had an r6 in there. So I just took off some r6 parts and put them on my DR-Z400.

In a bit of musical parts there are now r6 front brakes on a friend's 636. I took the 636 master cyl, lever, perch, etc and put it on my DR-Z400. Then I realized I needed another perch for the clutch. So I took the r6's. Debating on whether or not I should use the throttle assembly from the r6 as well.

I also got some Metzler racing slicks I'm wanting to trade someone for some regular street tires or maybe some offroad tires in 17" Decisions, decisions

Well that's not where I was hoping to see this thread go. Boo!!!

Here's some inspiration to get those 17's on it and take it to the streets.

Beautiful bikes, guys!

SHE RUNS!!!!!

I rebuilt the carb, got a battery and tidied up a few things. She turned over and ran perfectly with the first bump and the choke out. Rode her around the neighborhood for a minute. I'm hooked!

I ended up getting some Kenda 270's for strictly offroad duty until I get the registration paperwork back for street use.

My offroad group has a big meet on September 13 which I plan to be at with my DRZ. She won't be pretty like everyone else's but she'll be mine. I'm so excited!!

I suspect this winter will consist of me taking her down to the frame and refinishing all of the nasty primer pieces.

I'll get some pics and vids soon.

PS the R6 throttle assembly did NOT work so I stayed with the stock.
