Carburetor / Valve Problem?
Hey Guys.
Original Problem: Puffing sound coming from the engine/Lack of Problem Story: So as stated in a previous thread I made about a broken carb and the problems that could be associated with it. So I ordered a new Carb from Ztrack and got it last week but wasn't able to put it in my bike. Yesterday my brother and I found time and put it in, all the cables and hoses matched up. I wasn't able to test ride it last night because it was too dark but just now I went for a ride. The same problems are still there, there is a little bit more power but it seems as if the puffing sound has been amplified. Possible Causes: The bike has 10300 miles on it and hasn't had a valve adjustment yet, could this be it? The puffing sound comes from the front end of the bike could it be an exhaust leak? Plan for now: I plan on synching the carbs because that hasn't been done since the 500 mile service. I will try and find time to do the valve adjustment, I have service manual and plan on using the videos Ninja250r made (Thanks Man!).

I didn't see that! So exhaust leak is a possibility? Do you think I could just take a screw out and take it to a local screw shop to get a similar one, or should I get the exact screw!

Believe it or not those nuts are hard to find. I had this same problem and only after searching a dozen hardware store and part supplier... O'reilly's was the only place that had them in grade #8. They are metric nuts which no one seemed to keep on hand.

I can't believe the trouble some people seem to have finding nuts and bolts on this forum. Ace Hardward, True Value hardware, Lowes and Home Depot always seem to have what I need.
I'm sure any fastening store will have what you need.

Depending on the screw or nut, finding metric hardware can sometimes be harder at your typical big home hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot especially if there is no imperial equivalent. Ask me how I know after I was working on the Ninjette. A store specializing in screws like "Tacoma Screw" would be your best bet. If my mechanic is working on an import car and he needs a screw or bolt, he doesn't go to Home Depot.

So as I am writing this I have the biggest smile on my face, and its been a long time since I've smiled about the ninja.
The problems: Missing 1 bolt on EACH HEADER Ripped Diaphragm The fastener place had the bolts, they're a little bigger on the outside but the inner diameter is the same. My guess is that the bolts rusted and slowly unscrewed themselves due to the vibrations. With the 2 shims under each needle and the snorkle removed its fantastic. When I was reading about the people who said it was like a new bike when they did that I thought they were over exaggerating, but its true. What Improved: Power (Torque, maybe horsepower I try not to speed so I may never know) Throttle Response Sound, it has a deep growl/wallow at small opening Thank you all for the help! I would of never noticed that I was missing bolts on my headers.

torque isn't power, it's force. Horsepower is power, as are watts. You can't say the bike has more power but not more horsepower...that's like saying the temperature is hotter, but not in degrees.

Now...forgive me for being a newb...but what are you all talking about "shims under each needle and the snorkle removed"? |

This is a good place to start but there are lots of other threads on this topic.

1. On the back side of the air box. Part 14073A in this photo... 2. More like an hour and a half or so. You can get to the needles without removing the carbs.
