Need Help + Opinions
Hey guys,
I've been offered a trade for my ninja 250r. The offer in question is a 2003 cbr600rr. It has around 23000 miles. The only problems are: it runs etc, but it needs its valve inspection service done and the brake pads and oil would also need changing. How much would it cost? and can someone in the san francisco area with mechanical know how come with me to check out the bike? I can pay for lunch/dinner and gas! Second how much would it cost for a dealer to take a look at the bike? I really like the cbr600rr....but ya...i need a second opinion in terms of its condition.

Yea, just thought I would throw that up there for ya'..........I think we both know, like all used vehicle purchases it's all about what condition. Both cosmetic and mechanical.
I live on the left coast so I can't help you there......Good luck and......................Caveat emptor

I took a look at the bike today and as far as I can tell, the brake pads would have to be changed, and the seller mentioned a valve inspection needs to be done. The only reason I really want someone with a better mechanical knowledge to look at it is that I am slightly worried since it is a direct trade for a bike of lesser value....

say no. tempting offer but your better off keeping your 250. There are better deals out there.
I should also mention that valve service normally runs about 500$. Assuming seller didnt do the first inspection/service, it could be more. |

Those 23,000 miles worry me and the owner not doing the valve service worries me more. If the bike hasn't been treated well, the engine may not have another 15k miles in it. And getting the valves and brakes done is going to cost you.
I could have sworn there was a thread on here somewhere on how to check out a used bike, but I'm not finding it. Recreating from several sources:

I'd consider adding/duplicating this post up in this sticky thread about what to look for in a used bike?
for good summation, @gfloyd2002

Lol, I posted a link in the other thread? My brain is getting too old - I'm starting to repeat myself and can't find places I've been before.
Inability of search feature to search for term "used" twarted my efforts. Yeah, that's the ticket. I'm not too old, it is the search feature's fault!

He claims to have all the repair/maintenance work records, so I am gonna go through them this week. I noticed the chain etc are well maintained (greased etc) and the brakes will need changing in about 1000-2000 miles. Tires are brand new. One thing though is the bike was a bit...umm dirty when I saw it. He said he will be cleaning it this week. I am most likely going to take it to sfmoto and have a pre purchase inspection done (its around $75).
PS: I have a few pics of the bike if anyone wants to see it

There is a line or two in the post that may make sense in this thread but not that thread, but I left it as-is rather than edit inside your post for now.

I want to see it because I like pictures. Sounds like the bike was ridden, most bikes don't even see 23k, and idk when cbrs need their valves done but 23k doesn't sound too far off unless its like its first valve job. Hondas run forever, and if the bike seems maintained with that many miles, it probably is. Not saying for sure but thats just what I think. The mileage would be a bit much for me though

its because of the higher miles that I really want to have the bike checked out. Will be doing it this week with sfmoto. Will upload pics later.

If you get it checked out and all isnt too expensive then ide do it.
But if itll cost you more than 600 then maybe decline it
