Just one more HID retrofit

Hello All!!

I just wanted to share my HID projector setup. It is based on the following thread but with just one projector/lens.

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...t=hid+retrofit

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...7&postcount=66

Still needs a LED strip in the upper section facing to the carbon fiber plate to make the reflecting Ninja vinyl glow.

It is a Bi-Xenon lens so it should be enough to ride.

I'm sharing this since it looks like everyone is using 2 projectors and I liked the asymmetric look.

Regards

Thanks!!!

Here it is fully assembled... will be installed soon.

The LED strip is connected with the HID so whenever the light is on the logo will be "on"

It will be using the same connector as the OEM low beam and I still need to adapt a connector for the high bean/HID solenoid.

The light beam is a flat line and light output seems to be very good. we will see...

What were your considerations for putting light on one side versus other?

Just the fact that the "nose" in the middle of the headlamp might cut/interfere with the light beam. So I decided to put it in the right side since we drive on the right side of the road and cutting left side of the beam would be the best for oncoming traffic.

At the end , the "nose" did not interfere with the beam

I bought an extra headlight assy to keep one in case something went wrong...

By now I'm using LED H1 Bulbs (No ballast and easier wiring)
https://www.amazon.com.mx/gp/product...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also I went with two projectors, there's is so much better light output with both. Thinking on testing HID's with dual projectors but LED's are OK.

Regards!!!!
Thanks! Will definitely contact you for more info once I'm further in. Probably need more info or photos on how that plate and light is attached.

So you replaced HID bulb with LED and reused same projector light? Can you get another photo like this with LED bulb? Thx!

Also attached some notes on the assembly.

Hopefully this is useful.

Let me know if I can do more to help

@MauR, thank you SO MUCH for photos and instructions! Gonna make it much, much easier.

Larger-than-filament LED definitely causes less-sharp focusing as can be seen by fuzzy cut-off line. But at least projector separates light and dark sides much, much better than reflector lights. LED definitely looks weaker than HID, even with two of them! I’m going to research LED bulbs more, most of them fall short of even incandescent bulbs. There's rampant lying with vendors claims such as this 1200w 260 000 lumen bulb!!! Asking them what it actually puts out comes back with "about 1 000-1 500 lumens" . Which is less than incandescent bulb and many times less than HID!

Perhaps I may make my own bulb from a Cree XHP70.2 LED or some such.

These guys take pedestrian old flashlights and upgrade them with latest LEDs from Cree to make lightsabre!

Most LED bulbs use multiple crap LED chips in CSP package. Which results in larger-than-filament size and results in fuzzy focus and glare. They are typically only 50-lumens/per watt OTF (not as efficient as incandescent halogen). Genuine Cree xhp70.2 LED is 100lm/w OTF. At equivalent 55w power-consumption, you're looking at 5500-lumens, or more than 2x automotive high-beam lights.

Trick is mounting it into bulb-format. Most of those LED bulbs appear to use ceramic base, while heat-resistant, but doesn't actually conduct heat very well. I'm thinking of mounting to one-sided copper centre support attached to aluminium heatsink base (bottom is wasted in HID projector anyway). In which case, thermal-conductivity will be fast enough to not require those silly little fans they use.

Wow, they are crystal clear and have enough intensity to look like a modern car.
That will most certainly improve the rider's visibility and visibility of the bike's presence.

No, nothing yet... those are Generic HIDs and as you said they are brighter than LEDs

I think the way to go with LEDs is fabricate them as you plan to do... but not easy at all...
