Not to hijack, we had this thread on this a short while back. If you play or sing give it a bump, I'm sure there are more musos here than found it.

Badass! Good logic in his thinking.

From http://data.grammarbook.com/blog/sin...e-vs-none-was/

Rule: The word none is versatile. It has a plural sense (“not any”) as well as a singular sense (“not a single one”). When none is followed by of, look at the noun in your of phrase (object of the preposition). If the object of the preposition is singular, use a singular verb. If the object of the preposition is plural, there is more leeway. Most of the time, but not always, you will want to use a plural verb.

Examples:
None of the pie was eaten.
None of the children were hungry. BUT None (as in, “not a single one”) of the children was hungry is not incorrect.

In a sentence like “None were missing,” there is an implicit noun that answers the question, “None of what?” If that noun is singular, none takes a singular verb. If that noun is plural, it is up to the writer and the sense of the sentence to determine whether none takes a singular or a plural verb.

Examples:
None was missing. (None of the pie was missing.)
None were missing. (None of the cookies were missing. But there may be times when a writer prefers was, as in Not a single one of the cookies was missing.)

Note: Apparently, the SAT testing service considers none as a singular word only. However, according to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary of English Usage, “Clearly none has been both singular and plural since Old English and still is. The notion that it is singular only is a myth of unknown origin that appears to have arisen in the 19th century. If in context it seems like a singular to you, use a singular verb; if it seems like a plural, use a plural verb. Both are acceptable beyond serious criticism” (p. 664)
Very insightful, Teri! The English language is so full of rules with just as many exceptions to those rules. There's a reason it's one of the more difficult languages to learn. We English folk like to break rules apparently.

"would of"

Would've is what you're looking for, which is a contraction of would have. Would of makes no sense whatsoever. You're replacing a transitive verb with a preposition.

"fixing to" or "fistening to"

It may originate from "fixate"-focusing on something, or "fix"- set one's eyes or mind on something.

Today's versions are horrendous.

Some of it is pretty anal. I can deal with the "grammar nazis" but when I read a post that says " I need to replace my breaks" I just assume you also call those tiny flying blood suckers "skeeters" too.

I'm on board with the grammar-nazis. Sorry, but it grates on me when things are used that wrongly. Yes, I can piece together what you meant, but it makes my brain do a full-stop to look at it. Not for long but it does interrupt the flow of the thing I'm reading.

On another board, a guy was talking about his reed valve peddles. Another guy started using that spelling. Eventually I posted that peddlers peddle their wares, and reed valves have petals, like flowers. The original bad speller still hasn't gotten it right, but has changed to pedals.

Disc and disk are two variants of the English word for objects of a generally thin and cylindrical geometry. These variations are due to the way in which the words originated. A widespread consensus has developed that the spelling variant should be dependent on the sense for which the word is intended. The convention for flat, rotational data storage media is that disk refers to magnetic storage while disc refers to optical storage.
Stupid Brits anyway...
Quote:
By the 20th century, the "k" spelling was more popular in America, while the "c" variant was preferred in the UK.
And for non-computer stuff:
Quote:
The words disc and disk can appear frequently in medical journals and textbooks, especially those in ophthalmology and orthopedics, and thus style guides often foster consistency by giving rules for which contexts take which spelling. AMA style for this topic is used by many publications. AMA says, "For ophthalmologic terms, use disc (eg, optic disc); for other anatomical terms, use disk (eg, lumbar disk).
http://writingexplained.org/disc-or-disk-difference has more info too.

Surprisingly, she has something of a fan club, I think its her voice that does it.

Here's one... using "fitment" to mean "fit", as in "Be sure to measure rim width to ensure correct tire fitment."

From the Merriam-Webster site:
Quote:
fitment
noun fit·ment \ˈfit-mənt\

Definition of fitment
chiefly British

: furnishing 2, fixture, cabinetry —usually used in plural
