Complete Repaint or New Kit?

I picked up this 250r for $600 and after rebuilding the carburetor I got it to run again. The previous owner had the entire thing spray painted this weird turquoise purple. Now I have an issue: should I get some used side fairings and just repaint the bike or should I get one of those Chinese body kits? The third option would be trying to get as much of the teal spray paint off of it and get to the original color.

IMO, the Chinese body kits aren't really worth it but that's just me. Repaint/Plastidip/used fairings would be what I would suggest.

Plasti dip is another option, I'm going to try it to my spare set if fairing, once I fix some on the cracks, etc.....

Dip can look ok. It took 6 cans to do this white, plus about 4 cans of pearl over it. It only lasted about a season, the tank needs to be redone.

How it started:

I want to try the rustoleum paint job but I can't figure out if it needs a clear coat over it.

Yes I figured as much but what is the type of clear coat that would go over Rustoleum?

The $50 paint jobs don't use any clear typically. I would worry about flex in the plastics and the rustoleum.

Since hardener is added to get the nice glossy finish, it may be a bit brittle. This is just conjecture, as I was going to do that, and decided not to.

I've always used the krylon fusion paints, I've always had good luck with those over rustoleum, just my 2¢

Why not find a local shop that does full auto body wraps and get something interesting done? Like a solid or metallic color that was never available from the factory, or even a full graphics setup, maybe something from MotoGP Moto3, the 250CC series.

If you don't like it you can always peel it off and start over, and it's most likely cheaper than a full professional paint job, and would get far better results than a rattle can.

Or you could go a little bit old school and cover the bike in fake fur....

I was thinking about keeping it sort of flat. The cracking of the paint is something I want to generally avoid.

+1 on this. As an experiment to test krylon v rustoleum, I painted two of my keys without any surface prep, knowing it'd rub off in my pocket. The krylon held up much better than the rustoleum did.

Well to throw in my two cents and my personal experiences ill tell you this much
1) The Chinese body kits of Ebay are 500 bucks either way you order them either 250 price with 250 shipping or 500 with free shipping The quality of them is 7 out of 10 I only had one hole that I had to drill out. the paint was pretty good quality and they came with a windscreen and a seat cowl so that's option 1
2) Painting yourself can be done but will cost you abit and a LOT of time. If you have experience painting with a rattle can go for it but don't expect the paint to last unless you take excellent care of it and yes clear coat probably about three coats will do
3) Wraps and professional painting can be expensive depending on where you live and how many painters / vinyl places are around your area if you want it done right you have to pay the man.
I guess in summary it depends on how much time and money you have to spend @
$200 to do it yourself Paint, Sand Paper, Clear Coat, Sealer, And ALOT OF TIME
$500 Complete Chinese Body Kit 2 hours of labor
$??? Professional painting / wrapping not sure of cost but quality is assured.

Thanks! I opted to go with painting it myself. I picked up a random crashed fairing from a junk yard for free to practice my painting technique and paint combinations. I'm trying to avoid the cracking down the line. If my painting ends up horribly I'll just be going with a Chinese kit.
