They will break, wear out or be sold or traded off for better or more functional things.
People break and wear out too but the experiences and memories with people are far more valuable than any thing I have or will ever have.

The last race of the season was this past weekend. Once again, I stood on the podium with my Father, my Dad and my mentor. In a surprising uttering of words, the nature of which almost never come out of his mouth, I was brought to tears and words for my first place medal thank you speech disappeared out of my head.

When you compare that to mere things, they truly are meaningless.

I have a jar of ash from St. Helen's since we left Washington the day before she blew her side. A friend of my dad's collected it.

You know, on another note, I really wish I had the ability to say these things in person. They only ever come to me when I'm behind a keyboard and they take a while to put together.

Those of you who have the gift of saying things like this to a persons face, in real time, are truly gifted.

I know you are talking about saying good positive things, but oddly I am reminded of this scene from You've Got Mail...

[Joe Fox to Kathleen Kelly (Shopgirl) in email] Wouldn't it be wonderful if I could pass all my zingers to you and then I would never behave badly and you could behave badly all the time and we'd both be happy? On the other hand, I must warn you that when you finally have the pleasure of saying the thing you mean to say at the moment you mean to say it, remorse inevitably follows.

My mouth is a smartass. That's just the way my childhood was and all through school it was a defense mechanism.

My brain takes a while to catch up.

You see the issue.........falls in line with your quote.

I have a habit of saying/doing the wrong thing at the wrong time and then feeling like a major b**** afterwards. and I'm too much in my head to think of the witty good things when they need to be said. That's ok, I just let myself get entertained by everyone else's witty words.

this is the scene that always comes to mind or me - Stranger Than Fiction
