Shimming / Needle Questions &Weirdness
Folks,
I have my carbs apart (98 Ninja 250) trying to fix some fueling issues that are kicking my butt. First I notice that my main jet needle has a c-clip and several different slots for needle height. Does that mean I have an aftermarket needle ( and probably aftermarket jets too)? Also, as I pulled out the first needle several washers fell out. I didn't really notice what order they were in. I paid close attention on the second needle. Strangely I have two tiny washers sitting ABOVE the c-clip. That doesn't make any sense to me. If anything they should be below the c-clip, right? I mean, they're supposed to be holding the needle up.

Yes, you have aftermarket needles. Free jet kit!
Factory pro recommends putting washers in a sandwich between a pair of c-clips to weight the needle a bit. You can also use washers under the clips as sort of "half steps" between clip positions. Check out some of the info on the jetting database discussion thread. This might help with some of your questions: check out this page as well: http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Ninja_2...le_Information |

Thanks for the link. I was reading some of that stuff earlier.
Everything you say makes sense. What doesn't make sense it to have washers on top of a single c-clip. Right?

I don't think it's going to be an issue that the washers aren't sandwiched between clips. There's a spring on top of them.
If it makes you feel better, you can always go to a local hardware store and try to find some more clips that are identical in size and put those on top of the washers. |

Thanks again. Based on some research and discussion in the thread below, I decided to toss the shims and go down one slot on the needle. Problem solved! Hot damn!
