Front sprocket, help!!

Hey guys and gals.

I know a lot of people have used the 15T sprocket to help bring the RPM down a little on the highway as well as making first gear a little more useful. What sprocket are you using as I have viewed the JT Sprocket website and they do not make a 15T for this model (08-10 250r). I dcided to use this sprocket once I ordered my R-0990 filter and Factory Pro Jet Kit.

I have searched and have found no definitive answer. If you have done this sprocket swap, I would love to hear which one you used. Also, can I still use the factory chain or does that need to be replaced as well?

Can anyone else that has done this swap that has a full exhaust, R-0990 filter and jetting inform me how their bike performs now compared to when it was stock? I do not want to slow the bike down with a 15T sprocket, I am hoping that the additional power from the above mentioned mods will over come that and make the top end a little better.

Hey want1sobad,

The link you attached is asking me for what model, year, etc. When I click on Kawasaki 250r, it only goes up to 2007? Am I missing something?

pre-gen and new-gen are interchangable. pre-gen is what you want, (order the 07').

Careful which one is ordered. MCSS doesn't show me a part #. Seems their website is not working for me right now. One has to be shimmed and one does not. Here's a link to one that doesn't require any shimmimg.

Yeah I figured since it was the one you were recommending. The DK site actually shows the one I linked to fit the pre-gens also. Just wanted to make sure the part # was verified prior to him ordering.

those are parts # for the old gen...
new gen the thickness is 9.3mm...
old gens the thickness is 8.8mm or 8.3mm...
So to get it PERFECT, you need a shim. Some run without shim...but they're not perfect

^^ If I buy any, I would check part # against JT's website to be sure...cuz pre-gens will fit...just diff thickness...unless you use shim of course.

I wonder if 1/2 a mm could really matter. My bike seems perfect...

Part# 92200A-1389 (92200A is the common part number both retailers use - I think the full number is the "official" number).

This is a splined washer that is used inside your transmission, but is also the perfect shim (also what I use).

Couple problems...

1. Part listing only says "washer" How thick is it?
2. Part is on back-order
3. $15 for a washer... Maybe a new sprocket would be better

If I were doing it I'd buy it from local dealer for a buck or so. But if I install it already I wouldn't worry it. Def not going to pay $9 for shipping.

1) Yes, it does call it a "washer," but it is nice that it is splined because it fits the shaft nicely. It is 1mm thick.
2) I know, it sucks.... I'm waiting on a break rotor, which isn't due until mid Dec.
3) It is insane what you pay for shipping for these little nothing parts, which is why it is usually best to wait until you have a substantial shippment, or use it as an excuse to buy a nice tool or accessory to justify shipping. And yes, it would be ideal to get the sprocket that is specific to the '08+, but if you are unable to get your hands on one and have to go with the pre-gen model, shoot me a PM... I'll hook you up.

it was same thickness as stock sprocket(measured with caliper), installed and worked perfect without any shim or washher

Does this mean you have a used pre-gen 15T available or you have the shim? I'm thinking at this point the shim is not the best solution either. Adding a 1mm shim still would have the "perfect" setup off by 1/2 a mm.

I think I am just going to buy the 43T rear sprocket that JT offers for the 08-up Ninjas.

I dont want to worry whether I have to shim or not..

Swapping a 42T in the rear is the closest to a 15T front.

If your planning on fully modding the bike as described and you weigh less than 150 lbs a 41T is the fastest in the quarter mile. 175 lbs i would run a 42T. 200 lbs and I would run the 43T for the 1/4.

Still researching this...

Actually, a 1mm shim would be almost factory spec. The 08-up front sprocket is 9.3mm thick, while the pre-gen is 8.5mm thick. So it is actually a .8mm difference between the two.

I am definitely going to purchasing the pre-gen front 15t sprocket with the above mentioned shim.

The Drivenracing.com sprocket 1098-520-15T measures to 9.3mm if anyone is searching.
