Erratic Idle

Hi all, I'm trying to track down a cause for a strange issue I'm having on my '05 250r. During cold startup my idle will vary wildly between 1200 RPM and 4500 RPM when on choke. It seems to hunt and peck for a consistent RPM but never seems to level out. I've also been unable to achieve a consistent idle at warm, but it's a slightly different issue. Each time I come to a stop the engine will idle at a different RPM, typically somewhere between 1200 and 2500 RPM, but it will hold at that RPM. Any clue what the heck is going on?

Hi and welcome!

Hmmm, could be multiple issues:

- sticky slides
- vacuum leak
- leaking vacuum hoses
- clogged fuel circuits
- clogged jets
- incorrect pilot-screw settings

I've checked both the boots and hoses for vacuum leaks and didn't find any, I guess it's probably time to pull the carbs and take a peak inside.

How old is the gas? Has it been sitting with a low level of fuel?

Bad gas or condensation in the tank can cause what you described.

Adjusting the idle mixture screws to the optimum setting is will help it idle smoothly, as will precisely synced carbs.
