Thanks Racer x. CynicalC the chain tensioner is finished it's just a spring loaded bar with a longboard wheel on it I use them for a lot of projects they hold up pretty well as long as springs are sturdy. And I see what you mean about the bars underneath the seat I'm going to add a few more pieces of metal to strengthen the whole section up.

I added more bracing to the frame at the suggestion of observers on this awesome forum. that's okay needed to be done anyway and I took a picture of the inside of the tube to show how thick this tubing is it's not thin wall.

Ninja trike update
Been a while but finally got more parts and there for more work done. I mounted the original rear ninja caliper, master cylinder and overflow bottle for the radiator. Installed chain and started some wiring.

I've never tried a trike, but I'd think you'd want a much beefier rear brake than the stock one. More rotating mass and weight distribution to the rear would make the rear brake much more effective, but also require more force. Between the light weight, low power, and budget-friendliness, our rear brake is damn near useless. If anything, I think I'd go on eBay and snag a stock front setup from a literbike to graft onto your rear. You'd need an extended hydraulic line, but you'd be wanting steel braided anyway.

That's probably the case I'll have to try it out and see what happens. funny thing is most of my custom motorcycles and stuff I don't even bother installing a rear brake because the front usually does the job but on the trike it's probably different

Yeah, like I said, I've never ridden a trike. So I'm doing a whole lot of speculating here.
I'm sure the front will still get a lot of weight transferred to it during braking, which is what makes it effective. But I'm betting with a MC sized contact patch, even locking it up isn't going to bring all that weight to a stop in a reasonable distance. If you had a differential, it might be cool to have independent rear brakes and have a skid-steering effect.

Yeah I've only ridden that regular motorcycle trike that was converted. Yeah I'm hoping the length of the trike will offset a couple of it's possible quirks. On the bright side if the rear brake doesn't lock up it'll never skid-steer LOL

Yeah I'm currently balls-deep in the middle of the wiring not the funnest job but since I kept the original harness all I have to do is extend most of it and I think we'll probably be okay I hope

Hey I got a wiring question out there for anybody who knows but if you have two wires that are identical in color even if they're multicolored can they be hooked together and ran to the same line or do they still need to be separate and why would they do that?

I was able to start it up an hour ago. Installed the clutch cable and hooked up the throttle, it runs just fine motor wise. Still got a lot of work to do before I can put it on the ground and drive it away. Will push tomorrow to finish wiring.

Really cool project! I just have a couple of questions for you. Will you be putting a smaller dia, higher ratio rear sprocket to compensate for the smaller rear tires? The 250 has a lowish top speed and cutting the tire size by more than 50% will cause the trike to top out at apprx 50mph. Second where are you planning on mounting the radiator? I only ask based on the location of your over flow catch, looks like it is planned to be behind the seat. Not criticizing just wondering if the seat will limit airflow and cooling. Finally, have you considered a basic limited slip rear to keep drive and braking forces to both tires while still allowing the rear tires to turn independently? PM me should you be interested in my design idea. You would not have to change much of what you have already built. Keep up the great work Ant |

Sorry Ducati 999 I have figured out how to PM anybody yet. And yes I have changed the ratio for the rear sprocket I dropped it from a 45 to 30 hopefully that'll be enough. I'm not a hundred percent sure but no big deal to order a different size sprocket if it's not right on target. As far as the radiator location goes, I tried to get as much space in between the seat as possible and I am considering maybe building some ram air ducts to help out with air flow. I do a lot of freeway driving and Vegas has become very windy over the last few years for some reason that should help with some cross flow across the radiator. Lol, but we'll have to see how it performs.

I would not consider a differential unless I was installing a regular car motor on a trike. Unless you know somebody who makes a very small differential that could be used on a vehicle this size, the only option is a regular car differential and that is too much weight too heavy and would only consider it with the car motor

There are a lot of differentials and axle setups on ATV and side by side off road vehicles as well as racing go carts. But for practice purposes you are good with one wheel drive.

Yeah I was poking around looking at differentials for ATVs and side-by-sides, most of them are shaft drive and it's difficult to find a chain drive. Northern Tool had a limited slip differential I believe it was fairly inexpensive but it was only good up to 10 horsepowerand but that's not going to work. The only downside to my trike having a split axle is, it's only one wheel drive. But it's not a thousand horsepower either. And there's quite a bit of weight on those wheels back there. Its not light and neither am i. It should work pretty well. I would love for it to have been a 2-wheel drive but a solid axle across the back won't turn for crap. The only reason that axles work on a regular off road 3 wheelers is because the wheels slide across the top of the ground and that works for off road, not so much for the street.

Does anybody know if the thermostat on the 250ninja has a ground? I marked all my wires and I know it has a temp sensor blade but I think there was a ground and I'm not sure.

I got most of the wiring done I couldn't figure out where to place the computer and CDI box so I decided to stuff inside of ammo box to clean it up a little bit and keep them safe.

It's funny you should say that, when I first started this project I was trying to figure out how to stick the original rear end on it but no matter how I tried it just looked terrible and I couldn't do it. LOL

Please watch Youtube : Around the corner (1937) How Differential steering works. I cant link to it from here at work but it explains how to build your own simple and durable differential. Based on what I have seen you build so far, you have more than enough skills to fabricate a working differential for any future trikes you may build. I agree with you that it is unnecessary for this project but it never hurts to learn.
The first few mins of the video are weird but stick with it and you will see why I think you could build one easily. Just 9 mins and a few seconds of your time. |

Yeah I have to definitely check that out. I'm in the middle of trying to hook up the rear hydraulic break linkage system at the moment but I'll take a look at that when I get a spare chance. Thanks appreciate it.

IT LIVES!!
Well finally came off the saw horses and I was able to test it out, it runs. Had to rebuild the chain tensioner. I have to hot wire the fan to a switch. I need to finish wiring to all lights and finish putting the fairing on. And finish paint. Haven't taken it out of the trailer park just yet but I will surely do a test run down the road see what happens.
