That doesn't mean it's not a cool bike. It just sounds lousy.
I've got a few hundred miles on a RC390.

It's a bit uninspiring to ride as well.

Handles great, but I can't get past the "putt-putt..."

Purely in the interests of keeping things accurate the KTM is 375cc.

It's all relative. I used to have a 400cc in-line four (GSXR) that made parallel twins sound pretty ordinary in my opinion.
Personally I think V twin sounds best but the manufacturers don't seem to like making small displacement V twins.

Looks like we've reached a nice compromise splitting the difference.

Honda did the same thing calling the CBR a 300 when it's actually only 286cc. This is a little disappointing as an owner of one as they could have got another HP or maybe two by going to the full 300. You need all the extra ponies you can muster when there's only 30 of them doing the work!

Sorry, not trying to be rude here but I really don't think you know what you're talking about

Weed wacker? maybe 50cc scooters might sound similar but a lot of single cylinder motorcycles sound enjoyable (with distinctive pulsing sound).
I also love how fun and simple single cylinder bikes are.
So you're saying that KTM RC390 or any single cylinder motorcycle sound like a scooter, weed wacker, lawn mower, etc?

Trust me, I have heard of BOTH weed wacker and single cylinder motorcycle IN PERSON.
They do NOT sound similar AT ALL.

Wow, I guess I touched a nerve.

Calm down, please. I was not being literal. I just don't prefer the sound of single-cylinder engines compared to other configurations, and used slightly colorful language to express myself.

Fair enough?

Of the engine layouts you can actually buy, my favorite has to be the triple. When a Triumph triple is on song, it sounds fabulous.

To be perfectly clear, it's just an aesthetic preference that means nothing when you get right down to it. If I were to go small-bike shopping tomorrow, the RC would be very high on the list. Why? Because I'd be buying a motorcycle, not a musical instrument. The ride matters more than the sound.

But given the choice between a nice throaty twin and a single in otherwise identical bikes, I'd take the twin.

PS: Re your video clips above. Listen to the weed whacker at 3:15-3:25. Then listen to the RC390 at 1:44-1:52. Draw your own conclusions about the character of the sound. (Note: Of COURSE they don't sound identical... "sounds like" and "sounds the same as" are different things.)
