The FZ-07 is pretty much the opposite, being a 397 lb. (wet) motorcycle with 75 hp, decent handling, and a very reasonable price. Its quarter mile time is 12.06 seconds.
Indeed, I think the reason the FZ07 has done so well is it's the closest equivalent to the universal Japanese motorcycle of the 80s. Lightweight, cheap, and with great power and driveability.

So the power on the Honda CB500s sucks? That makes me sad. It felt good when I sat on one in the showroom.

Now I need to sit on an FZ-07. I was thinking the -09 might be too much and too big for me but the -07 sounds like it might be a good candidate.

The FZ-07 is a stellar bike. It's doing to the motorcycle market what the original SV650 did when that bike first came out.

Light, good power, and lots of fun to ride - it's hard to go wrong with one of them. It would be a good bike if you're moving on from the Ninja.

CB500s fit in between the 250/300 and 600/650/700cc class bikes. They're significantly faster than the 250/300 bikes. Just not as fast as the 600-700cc bikes. After test-riding the CBR500R, my Ninjette race-bike felt positively slow!

I'll check that link out- thanks.

I'm not sure I'll ever be "ready" or needing a SuperSport but a midclass bike might eventually find its way into the garage. Eventually.

throwing in votes for the sv 650 and ninja 650r. I stepped sideways with my klx but stepped up in fun factor.

I'll probably be stepping up to a Tiger 800 (and keeping my Ninja). The Ninja is plenty fast for the street, I don't need another street bike. The Tiger would give me a great bike for taking trips on.

FZ-07 is a great all rounder and makes a good track bike as well.

You may actually find the Tiger very quick. Without luggage, the excellent motor, high ground clearance and sport touring tyres that thing is actually a bit of a sleeper.

Go to a Triumph dealer and have a look / ride on a triple. Yeah, they allow test rides, it might just change your mind. The 675 triple is very linear with it's power application.

If you want to stay in the sport class of bikes. You might consider reaching back into the not so distant past, before 600's became Jekyll and Hyde machines. The CBR600 F4i, YZF600R, I think it was the ZZR600 from Kawi.
Interesting note on the 675. A friend had a Daytona 675 a couple years back, and one day on an open stretch we both took off from a rolling start. Me on my '06 SV650n. We were dead even until we both backed-off at a fairly high speed. I was shifting the SV in the red.

We stopped for gas, and I asked him why he didn't pull away from me like I was backing up. He didn't know, and said he was shifting at 10,000. I informed him that's just about the time the Triumph woke up and made some serious power.

Just goes to show that in most situations even a bike like the Triumph is pretty strong, but it takes extra effort - and revs - to really unlock its full potential.

He ended-up selling the Daytona and buying a KTM RC390, and doesn't really miss the power of the Triumph (that he didn't use anyway).

From the sound of it your best bet would be pretty much anything in the middleweight non-supersport category

sv650 would be my pick but the fz-07, cbr650f, and the cbr500r would all be considerations.

Something I've learned about these 250's.....they are little bad asses. Most people I know that have "upgraded" miss their Ninjettes. What's not to love? Got more power than advertised, very light and agile where you really are in control of the bike. Just overall one of the most fun bikes to ride in the world. If I'm upgrading I'm not going over 650cc because at 35yrs old I have no desire to go stupid fast. I am a Honda fan always have been always will be. Yamaha to an extent. I plan to save for a new(er) CBR next summer. Possibly a VFR. But it's doubtful I sell my 250 as I bought her for $100 and got her rideable for another $500. I've always been proud of that and it's the most fun I've ever had. Good luck OP and safe riding!
