Overpants?

I'm a bit confused by overpants. Okay, you wear them over jeans. But really, is a layer of cordura nylon going to give much additional abrasion resistance? It's strange in that they seem to be marketed as 'serious' protective gear (ie, they can be expensive and have lots of technical features) but in fact seem to offer minimal protection... thoughts?

I was given some overpants and just did a ride with them. They have knee pads and I wore them with hard-padded shorts. They weren't exceptionally well-ventilated, in fact the mesh panels on my leather pants would have kept me cooler I think... think I'll stick with my leather pants. The only plus might be that the overpants are less conspicuous when going into a restaurant, etc.

For me, it's the abilty to wear normal clothes under them. I can get in and out of them at my work desk. It's all a compromise, no matter what you choose. Something is better than nothing. I have been thinking about riding with Kevlar jeans, but then you get road grime on them too.

The pads in the knees and hips will be worth their weight in gold in a crash.

And the Cordula is good weather protection, if you ride in the rain.

Alan, one might think that riders buy/wearing gear based on the type of riding they plan on doing THAT day. So if you just plan on going for a nice slow cruise to the store or out to dinner then maybe the full race leathers are a bit much...

When buying gear, it boils down to 4 basic things;
Fit (most important)
Slide protection (material)
Impact protection (armor)
Comfort (warmth, coolness or stretches in the right places)

Many of my friends have the courtech overpants and swear by them. And yes... a few have crash tested them as well. While they do not offer as much slide protection as leathers, but they can be armored up quite adequately for your ride.

I just got myself a new pair. So I can ride to my job site, and pack them into my bags, and not have to change.

You seem a little young for suspenders.

But, hey, come on in. The water's fine...

Icon over pants here. Great to slip in and out of for work. Great additional abrasion protection if you have jeans under them. Sucks if you don't. The knee pads are great but do you no good because they don't stay where you need them being how loose over pants are designed.

Okay my turn, and 2¢,

Yes they offer awesome protection for the cost. You must remember that most major brand textile riding gear is made of several kinds of Cordura depending on the areas of the garment.

Ultra Light Weight Nylon Ripstop Fabrics (30, 70, 100 denier)
Nylon/Cotton Blends for Workwear and Denim
Textured Nylon Bottom Weights (160, 330 denier)
Light Weight Nylon Packcloths (210, 420 denier)
Textured Nylon or Polyester Packcloths (300, 500, 1000 denier)
Heavy Weight Nylon Ballistic Fabrics (630, 840, 1050 denier)

Also here is some reading material as well, http://www.cordura.com/en/about/index.html

The addition of CE armour, ease and convenience of cleaning and care, makes textile garments a solid choice for the everyday rider.

I myself have textile garments, FIELDSHEER exclusively, from mesh, to touring gear.
For more hardcore riding I do have a FIELDSHEER one piece leathers, because although textile might be awesome, Nothing beats a one piece leathers.

I also own a very old FIELDSHEER perforated leather jacket, that has been with me for many, many years, gotta love an old, and broke in leather jacket.

For those plans that make wearing even overpants a slim option, I turn to my BOHN bodyguard system underneath regular clothing, which is very convenient when going out. Nobody knows your wearing, except you.

I'm picking up a pair of overpants, soley for the reason that I don't have to change.

Overpants are next on my list of items to purchase for the sole purpose of being able to go places such as a restaurant on my bike without having to look out of place by wearing textile or leathers.. Get where you're going, strip them off, stash them away, and still look presentable.. LOL!!

Think about it this way. Kevlar lining in riding jeans have been shown to save your skin in a crash. Textile is generally a stronger material than kevlar. If you can trust kevlar jeans to save your skin, I think you can trust textile overpants to do the same.

I wanted the suspenders, that last thing I want is my over pants sliding down while standing on my pegs

A lot of the touring overpants come with suspenders. Which I believe is good thing, sometimes I wish my overpants did.

Overpants are a godsend for gym days. I would never be able to get proper leathers on after a workout, I just throw the overpants on over my gym shorts/pants. They are mostly what I use during the summer.

When I was using the bike to commute to work I used a pair of snowboarding trousers in cold weather. Warm, water resistant and two minutes to take off when I got to the office.
In summer I have Kevlar jeans in charcoal gray that don't show dirt not the best protection but better than nothing.
