[motorcycle.com] - 26,182 Victory Touring Models Recalled for Melting Brake Lines

Victory Motorcycles may be gone, but it’s not forgotten – especially by the fine folks at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as Polaris is recalling 26,182 motorcycles because of the risk of the catalytic converter melting rear brake lines and other wiring. The recall affects the Victory Cross Country, Cross Country Tour, Cross Roads, Magnum and Hardball from model years 2010 to 2017.

According to documents released by NHTSA, running these bikes in misfire conditions may result in higher exhaust temperatures. Elevated heat levels in the catalytic converter may damage the rear brake line and nearby electrical wiring, degrading rear brake performance.

The problem was first reported in October 2016 when Polaris received a warranty claim about a damaged rear brake line. Polaris opened an investigation which was completed in April 2017, and in May, Polaris reviewed its findings with NHTSA. In June, Polaris issued a technical service bulletin to change the routing of the rear brake line. In September, NHTSA contacted Polaris asking for an additional technical review. After reviewing the repairs, NHTSA and Polaris decided to escalate the technical service bulletin to a full recall.

Polaris dealers will re-route the rear brake lines on affected motorcycles so they are further away from the exhaust catalyst. Any customers who previously paid to have this done will be reimbursed.
