Is there a reserve?

Hi guys, as I posted in another thread I picked up my 2011 Ninja 250r today, just wondering as I don't see it, is there not a petcock, or a setting to switch to reserve? If not is there a good way of telling when I am going to run out of gas as I hear the gas gauge is not very accurate?

there is a petcock, and no there is no reserve. there is a fuel gauge or a low fuel light depending on US/EU spec. gas gauge can sometimes be slightly off but its usually somewhat accurate. you can also track milage, or do what i do, shake the bike when you get on it and listen for sloshing

As a concerned member I can tell you to take absolutely no gas-related advice from Alex. Unless you want a weekly workout. Your fuel gauge really is not that far off at all, and he's right about checking miles. Try to remember to reset your trip odometer each time you fill up. Make a mental note of how far you got on your last tank before you got low.

Definitely don't listen to Alex

You will push your bike until you can't feel your arms or legs.

You guys are too funny, and speaking of beer, living in Canada should make you envious of our "real" beer. lol
Thanks for the info, but one more question, if it has a petcock what is it for, or I should say what is the "prime" part for?

We have real beer here, it's called "imported"

not to mention our awesome microbrews, but that's a different battle we can all have later (Jay is buying)

The petcock is for any time you need to drain the gas tank. Repairs and whatnot. Set it to prime and the gas will flow regardless of whether or not the bike is on.

Perfect that is what I was wondering...mow one more question, the guy at the dealer said not to do an oil change until 1000 kms, I was thinking the 200, 400, 600 and then 1000. I am assuming that this would be just like the who has better beer argument (that I am buying)

Glad you are aware that you're buying. So, who's down for a trip to the cold-as-hell north?

The first scheduled oil change is at 600 miles, whatever kms that is.... If you are doing a different break in than the kawi recommended one then obviously it would be different. Maybe you want to look in to the moto man break in?

You are right about cold, it's 3 C out today which in your language is 37.4 F. That is what I was thinking, the 20, 200....and so on. Right now it has 32 km's on it. that is just from the ride home. **** i haven't even drove it yet, I had a friend ride it home fro me, I have only driven dirt bikes so I want to practice in the arena parking lot behind my house tomorrow before I venture out on the streets.

Definitely practice where it's safe. Do they have an MSF or course like it where you are? Those are ABSOLUTELY worth every dime.

Oh I am certainly going to take a course, unfortunately they are done for the year here so I will sign up in the winter for first thing in the spring. It will not be long now before the snow hits.

The PRIME setting is for when you want the fuel to flow through the petcock freely even when there is no engine vacuum (the engine is not running). In normal use, you'll (almost) never have to move the petcock on a new-gen from its "ON" position.

Your REAL gas gauge is your trip meter. My recomendation is to stop for gas at ~180mi.

You are right, he is wrong. Frequent early oil changes will keep shavings from break-in from floating around your engine. Once you hit 1000 miles or so, move to a good synthetic, and you should be good to go for a long while.

I dunno, I think it's closer to "you are right, and so is he".

Bikes go on to live perfectly happy lives by following the manufacturer's oil change recommendations, and bikes go on to live perfectly happy lives by changing out the oil every 8.2 miles during break-in. There is likely consensus to be found in that extending the oil change interval any past the stated recommendations may not be a good idea.

Wow, I bet there are 100 post's on this...and the general consensus is to change it more often during break in, so that is what I will do, with all these metal shavings you guys are talking about, can you actually see them in the oil?
