If you could have one bike to travel across the US on...

What would it be?

Post up a pic of it too. Just try to keep it from going over 800 pixels wide or high so people with slower connections don't need to wait 10 minutes for the page to load.

(EDIT: Cross country: road or offroad...whatever you fancy) Thanks Rock

I think if I were to do a cross country tour, I'd ride this:

BMW R1200GS

Great choice. With that bike not only can you go cross country but you can also go off road.

When I clicked on this thread I also had a R1200gs in mind. I guess it's just a great bike.

I might choose Buell Ulysses, but the BMW is hard to discount.

Alex, Gorgeous bike. What is the seat height on that bike? I only have a 30" inseam and have problems with the current crop of BMW. Wish I still had my R-50. That went across the US twice with a sidecar.

KLR doesn't really have enough horsepower to make it a nice long range machine. The constant high(ish) RPMs will grate on you after enough time. They also tend to wallow a bit when loaded down with a lot of luggage. The one my brother has is decent, but I wouldn't try to take it from coast to coast, same as I wouldn't try to take my Firebolt coast to coast. BWM and the Goldwing really have the long distance stuff figured out. Some of the Victory Cruisers would be a decent choice if you wanted a cruiser style.

Can't beat them for touring. You can carry all your camping gear in one. A good set of waterproof panniers handle the clothes, and you still have a luggage rack on the sidecar. You won't break any speed records---then again, who is in a hurry when touring. Can you imagine an older Kawi literbike set up with a JAWA sidecar painted Kawi Green. It would be an incredible machine. I am seriously looking into building something like that. We have a Brit who has a shop specializing in sidecars not far from where I live. He is building "The Spirit of Maine"--a sidecar rig set up to do more than 300mph at Bonneville.

BMW K1300S easily. I rode one two weeks ago and it's the sickest thing. Effortlessly eats comfortable miles, accelerates like a jet when you twist it and corners like it thinks "RR" is in it's model designation.

Alex - I'm not sure what the spec is for it. The seat can be put in 2 different positions, and you can also get a different low-style seat from BMW to put in those 2 positions to lower it as much as possible. I have a pretty short inseam myself, but still have the custom seat a bit higher than stock, and keep it in the highest position as well. I can get my toes down on both sides, and that's been more than enough. Having it up that high makes for maximum comfort once underway and also makes me feel more at home when leaning the bike over.

You wouldn't believe how hard it is to get deathray lasers through CA inspection.

When I seen the thread title this is the first thing that popped in my mind.

Although I think its just about the ugliest thing on two wheels(No offence to Wing owners.)

Look it can even tow a car.

I'm just not a GW fan. Those things are huge. I'd consider touring with a ZX14, but I'm not even sure about the Concours. It does look better than the GW by far...

This is a tough question....mostly because I don't know how any of these bikes suit me.

The upright position sucks for me because it puts a lot of weight and pressure on my lower back and butt....but is easier on the hip flexors and legs. The aggressive SS position on my gixxer alleviates the lower back/butt problem...but fatigues the hell out of my legs. Also, the wind protection is better.

For the moment I appear to be a supersport kinda guy....so I'll go with the ZX-14R:

I sat on one of these and the seating position is a little more upright than a typical SS....but definitely not as upright as a typical standard. Also...I'm not really a busa fan

I'd love to toss on a comfy seat and give it an Iron Butt try my the Ninjette.

I do have a soft spot for Honda, especially now that they are selling a bike in the States again that I would actually buy. The new Deauville is perfect for chewing up the miles, just needs a top case, tank and seat bags for some seriously long riding. Like Goldilocks said, it's just right.

The question comes with a qualifier, which in this case is unspoken - that gasoline remains in plentiful supply. If the condition now changes to one in which gas is in very short supply nationwide, and/or has become extremely expensive, then none of the afore-mentioned bikes would fit the bill. This is not an unlikely scenario either in the not too distant future, and the fact that one is contemplating riding a bike across the continent instead of driving an SUV could be taken to mean that fuel economy is a factor. In such a scenario, without prejudice or favoritism, I would choose the very bike that I currently have - the Ninja 250, the smallest bike that is highway-potent, with its 75+ mpg fuel economy (possibly 80+ mpg with a 15-teeth front sprocket). I wouldn't do it for fun, but if having enough fuel to finish the trip and get to my destination is the prime concern, then the Ninja 250 would be my choice.
