Exclamation Keep your rockers square

Just a word of warning when reassembling valvegear. Make sure all the rockers are nicely hooked over the valve heads with an 'ear' each side. It's hard to see but make the effort.
It is easy to get wrong because if it is off and sitting on the spring plate the clearance is still okay and the bike runs normally.
However a few miles on you get an odd knocking and when you open it up you find the edge of the cam has destroyed the rocker surface, Expensive

That's the first time I've seen that happen before, but I'd say that if that's the only thing that happened then you should consider yourself lucky because usually when there is a rocker failure, it is much more catastrophic than that. See my blog below for more info on what usually happens with rocker failures.

Yep, I'm lucky, Its only £40 and a week off the road. No broken ears, even after the trauma. I just missed it on reassembly, middle front which is the hardest to see.
As I said the worst of it is that there are no symptoms initially it all seems to run sweet and quiet. So you cane it up to 12k with the grin of a fool on your face little knowing the discrete carnage taking place with every revolution.
As well as oil and filter I am thinking in the circumstances a magnetic drain plug.
