Do you listen to songs while riding?

like mp3 or iPod is it safe? i used to do it but i got to distracted. i wonder if people still do it.

You should. The wind noise actually adds to riding fatigue on long rides. I rarely go anywhere without my earplugs. It could be a quick 10 minute trip, doesn't matter, I wear them. Hearing is valuable to me. Music is my life, not being able to hear it would kill me.

I do.... the Scala has integrated fm, ipod(any mp3) attachment, cell phone, bike to bike.... no problems with distraction to date. I multi-task well

Helps when you aren't blasting the music into your ears tho... the louder it is it is very distracting... I'm on a very soft setting when riding.

I have listened to my iPod while commuting before. It's not bad, and does eliminate some of the annoying sounds with marginally better music....but I'm just too lazy these days. All that fumbling with the ear buds and the helmet...eh screw it.

But depending on the type of ear buds you have, you would still be able to hear most of what's going on around you, provided you're not blasting the music up at full volume. I didn't notice a difference in terms of general awareness, if that's what you're concerned about.

I use in-ear headphones (klipsch image s4) with comply foam tips. They act as earplugs with a little music added basically. I never have the music up loud though, its more for when im stopped or bored on strait stretches of road... My bell apex helmet has space next to the ears so my in-ears fit good, not sure about other helmets...

i like them for killing wind noise, and hearing just wind noise for an hour kills me. It's barley loud enough to make out the lyrics...

I have a pair of Koss spark plugs that reduce noise and sound pretty good. I don't use them when commuting in the city, but do occasionally on rides into the Hill Country. I always ride with ear plugs, though. I want to be able to hear at least some music when I get too old to ride. :P

I use the Scala G4 as well to listen to music and talk bike-to-bike on rides if needed. I keep the music turned down low so it's not distracting. I love music and without it, my world feels bland.

those who live in urban areas that use mp3 players...that have come close to being creamed by a bus on foot should not listen while riding

I used to, but I don't have a player or in helmet playback system yet. It is one of the things that I consider fairly important in the commute. I think the in helmet devices with Bluetooth A2DP would be the best way to do this. The old way with earbuds always had the cable bugging me. Advantage is that when either device is properly fitted, they will decrease the wind noise which will reduce fatigue.

Basic advice is to make good playlists before putting the bike in gear, don't touch the player again until you stop.

If you get distracted by the audio in your car, DO NOT put audio in your helmet. In other words, use some common sense, if you don't have any then sell your bike right now! (sell your car too, take the bus)

AVRCP with handlebar remotes help.

I also jailbroke my iPhone and paid for Music Controls ($5) to enable Next/Previous Track AVRCP (Apple only officially allows Play/Pause) and it also lets me control Pandora radio and run it in the background.
