Hey Im not with my motorcycle so I cant look at it right now but has anyone taken the gas cap and that whole assembly off? Is there rubber in there? or anything that would melt? im thinking about powdercoating that as well

Yeah there is a big rubber gasket that goes between the cap flange and the tank.

that would most likely be easy to take off and replace though.

I was more thinking in the lock where you stick the key in and open it. Im wondering whats in there... I dont want to melt anything... If I can only powder coat the outer edge part of it I can do that to and just paint the center where the actual cap opens... I just want to put as many accents as I can. lol

It's got a lot of parts, but they can all be taken apart.

Yes there's rubber in the seal portion. The seal has rubber gaskets and springs that press the gaskets against the tank's filler neck. This poition of the gas cap is designed to allow air into the tank (as fuel is burned) so that negative pressure doesn't build up and stop fuel flow to the engine and the spring-loaded part of the gas cap is there to prevent (to some extent) gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere (a minor effort at pollution control) during positive pressure situations in the tank (like when the tank heats up on a sunny day). That's why the bike's gas cap tends to make those whining noises during and after rides.

I think you could disassemble it and powdercoat the parts that show then reassemble it. You'll just have to be carefull not to powdercoat the screw holes so it will all go back together.

The whole lock mechanism is easily removed from the cap itself.

There definately is some sealing surfaces in there. I would take the cap off to powder coat.

I would also take the petcock off.

I think there's even a tiny rubber piece in the keyhole cover flip-up part.

If you haven't done so already, I HIGHLY recomment completely taking the lock assembly apart anyway and greasing everything. Being stuck miles away from home ata gas station with an empty tank that has corroded shut and will not open really sucks.

A little WD40 in the lock goes a long way.

I don't think he's talking about powdercoating the tank, just the gas cap outer area.

It's just a simple o-ring. Easy to replace.

yeah @k-os is right. just the gas cap area or part. The gas tank will be painted.

Even if I can just get that ring part around the cap separately I could live with that. I just want to break up the black with the green as much as I can

this sounds like to much work... haha

Im dying not being able to ride it lately. The weather has been BEAUTIFUL!!! and I cant ride it! GRRR trying to do it right but hurry it up. lol

I can always do that part later if I want since the whole bike doesnt need to be down.

This is the 49-state pregen cap disassembled, your newgen is likely similar. It's not hard to do, and yes, you will need to do it to powdercoat the visible bits because the curing temps will destroy parts inside the latch mechanism.

Yeah thats what I was afraid of. 420 degrees tends to destroy stuff thats not made to handle heat (anything but metal) lol

So the get to the outer cap i have to take it ALL apart eh? thats a bummer.

I took mine apart to paint it over two years ago, did a two-stage silver and clear urethane:

Only took a few minutes to get it apart and put it back together again.

No you don't... You take out the 7 outer screws that hold the cap on, plus the one hidden inside and it all comes out as one piece. Then you can just take off the latch from underneath. It'll take you 5 minutes.

ill take it off this Friday then after work. I get off at 2:00 so I should have some daylight left. Then stay late sometime next week to powder coat it all. Im thinking I may only do the outer ring to give it more of just an accent

To be clear, I'm not tanking about the keyhole, I'm talking about the latch mechanism underneath it. You can spay as much wd40 as you like in the keyhole ans it won't get into the latch part. You can open the cap and spray the latch with the key turned and you might get some in, but nothing will even come close to the level of corrosion protection as opening it up and covering it with waterproof grease. I also used to believe that WD40 would be enough....until I got stranded the second time.
