transmission
Does anybody know the purpose of the feature on these transmissions that does not allow you to shift from neutral to 2nd gear at a stand still?

To find neutral easily, not overshooting from first into second.

Well I never paid much attention to it until I put my last engine together and took the bike for a spin around the parking lot. I can only shift between 1st, neutral and 2nd. Not that the positive neutral finder is my problem, I was just wondering about its purpose when this is the only motorcycle that I have worked on that has it. I pulled the engine and removed the lower half to access the trans and shift mechanism and all works well on the bench. Put it back together and won't shift past 2nd. Removed the detent spring and plunger and it will shift then all be it with no detent.

Right - but it's not unique to the ninjette; the neutral-finder gadget is included in most Kawi transmissions, even those that aren't aimed at newbies (ZX-10R, ZX-14, etc.)

It's a pain without it. Old race Did not have it. I think the old 50 cc aprilia RS 50 did not have anything like that. You really had to hunt for nutral. And you could find it easy when riding.
I remember going from first to second then back to first a lot look g for neutral. Can't remember what that was on.

When I replaced my front sprocket to a 15T, I didn't pay attention to this. Jumped on bike and ripped done the street, only to find that I couldn't shift to 3rd. Went back and readjusted, good.

Well, after needlessly tearing down the trans to investigate the source of this issue, only to reassemble it and have the same problem, I took the shifter detent with the stiff "blue" spring and put it in this engine, problem solved. Talk about the long way there!
