valve adjustment tool is it necessary?

Do I need to spend $40+ for this tool or can I just use basic hand tools?
I am not opposed to buying it if its really helpful.

it is supposed to make it easier but not necessary from what I read. A socket and a screw driver can do the same thing but again just not quite as easily, just don't drop anything

I am doing my valves on Saturday for the first time and plan on doing it with out the tool.

Bend the feeler gauges, and grind the face of the socket flat to engage more with the locknut, use a 1/4 in universal connector.
It's a half hour job if all goes well so set aside an afternoon.
Once it is all back together resist the nagging doubt that one of them wasn't quite right

I am doing it on Saturday for the first time. I just need to get over to Sears and get a set of feeler gauges.

^ yeah, I need to pick up a micrometer, I have calipers but micrometer is definitely way to go IMO, other than that I should be good to go.

I plan on doing basic tear down Friday evening to the point where I can just remove the head on Saturday morning and get down to business. hopefully it all goes well with no hiccups.... I don't like hiccups

the valve adjust tools make things really easy, but as has been mentioned, you can do the same with a screw driver and a socket. I didn't realize the pregens weren't shim and bucket...

Unfortunately they are not and the exhaust valves are little piggies to adjust due to access that rivals the secret chamber under the Sphynx )

You'll be fine without the tool. Just be careful when you're torquing those locknuts down!

EDIT

tool

Although you can get by without the factory tool it sure makes things a lot easier when you get to two of the exhaust adjusters.

Maybe ebay or maybe member here has sold his bike and now wants to sell valve adjusting tool?
