Back when you were younger....

So, the question is, back when you were younger, what was your dream bike?

Mine? Simple. I played a lot of Road Rash (yes I am dating myself now). And honestly, the bike I always wanted was....

And honestly, I'd still take one.

My husband used to have a 1986 Interceptor 500. We got it because it was small enough for me to reach the bars, and we had planned to teach me to ride it. That never worked out, and he's onto other bikes now, and I finally got around to learning and got my license.

It was a fabulous bike, though.

As for my favorite bike, I never really thought I could ride. I suppose I saw a lot of cruisers and thought that's what you were supposed to ride.

And then when I actually started looking at bikes... Ninjette!

Still trying to decide on my current dream bike. There are a few bikes I wish I liked! I'm hoping to get to a Kawi demo day and ride the new 400, and if I can find a Honda day I'd like to try the 500. Because of the bikes I've tried so far, I really like the R3. If I decide to get something newer than my adorable little Ninjette.

It was my first motorcycle, the H2 I still have. I was 20 when I got it in 1978. Every time I ride it, I get a little feeling that I'm 20 again. To me that's priceless.

You're lucky to still be around! (For those that don't know, a H2 is a 750cc 2-stroke triple - not the best "first bike"!)

I started on a tamer RD400 (2-stroke twin for you young folks). Still plenty of power to get away from a young rider (that thinks he knows what he's doing...).

We survived somehow. Probably more luck than skill in my case.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

The Interceptors were the first bikes that really made me sit up and take notice. There was this utterly cool, futuristic vibe to them.

I don't remember which one specifically. I just loved the aesthetics. Back then I didn't know squat about the technicalities so I didn't get excited about sophistication, engineering elegance or performance. Those priorities have now reversed. Looks come last.

I still have my original '86 VF500F Interceptor i bought in '86. Completely rebuilt it once already. Dream bike was actually this one. My brother still has it.

Now i'm dreaming of one of these next. Perhaps with RZ350/Banshee engine. Tired of heavy bikes.

The vfr1000 and also the vfr700 white with gold engine. Yeah not as fast as the 750 but cool.

I get that a lot, and I guess anyone is lucky to survive the first few months on a motorcycle, but I knew what the bike could do, and had plenty of respect for the twist-grip. Its weight was about the same as the Honda 500 four my cousin had, so it was not a difficult motorcycle to handle, and being 6'2" helped too. I passed my license test on it. It has quite a tight turning radius, so I could easily do the figure-8 part of the test. I had practiced doing 8s on the street in front of my house, with the 8 perpendicular to the street.

@DannoXYZ that is a primo 400 there, incredible shape, i tip my hat to you.

You also posted ......"Tired of heavy bikes"

Amen, after a 400 lb dry Ducati came into my life, I sold off my '84 Ninja 900 and GS1000S "Cooley replica"....realizing my small stature was a much better fit on the lighter Duc.

Even sold my 1956 BMW R69.....no turn signals (not required back then), a tiny tail light (Euro model, not DOT approved). I favored the Ducati...the R69 sat dormant, I finally sold.

My VFR800, though I like it, is an armload on a long, twisty venture.

Light is right. Pic of the '56, it was cherry. My first and only true, full, frame up resto.
But a collector bike, not a rider, severely dated. Lacked room to become a "collector".... hence my decision to sell. Worth a pantload today. I bought it for just $200 way back when. Note its' massive, oversized, 10 gallon Heinrich tank.

Edit added webpage re Heinrich tanks http://www.turtlegarage.com/2017/09/...e-accessories/

Yeah, no kidding! With the 6 gallon tank on my Guzzi I've been over 300 miles before reserve. It must be nice to make 500.

In the '80s I was a teenager, graduated from High School in '83.

When I saw and heard the 1980's Honda V-4 bikes (Magna, Sabre, all the VFRs) I was in love. Couldn't afford them at the time, and my family would have thrown a fit. So I stayed on the sidelines.

Now I got mine: Two "5th Generation" VFR800s, a '99 and a '01. I keep one here in Denver and the other in Huntsville Alabama where I spent a lot of time.

I'm in my mid 50s so I'm pretty sure these two will take me through to my eventual retirement from motorcycle riding.

Here's the 2001:

Here's the 1999:

+1 for the Interceptor.
I had the 500 my '86. After craving it for some years, I got a used one with 14000 miles.
I still have it, as stock as can be, but gathering dust in a relative's house, and needs some maintenance. It has 35000 miles now.

I had an 84 GPz900 in the mid 90's. Great bike. Hung pretty well with the 1995-1999 sport bikes my buddies were riding.

Then I got one of my dream bikes, the 1997 Honda CRB1100XX Blackbird. Awesome bike.

The other bike I have always loved the looks of, but never pulled the trigger on was the Kawasaki ZRX1100 (or the ZRX1200). One of these days I will find a nice used one at a low price and own it.

Always liked the 500 with that livery. Almost bought one new back in '85/'86 but went with a FZ600 instead (because I really wanted a FZR400).

Also seriously considered the all-white Interceptor 700 in '87, but went with a Ninja 750 instead.

Almost an Interceptor owner, but not quite. My oldest son does have a '98 VFR 800 that he really likes. Rock solid in the high speed stuff and the V-Four gear-drive engine is amazing.

I had a FZR600 with this same paint scheme but it was a 1991 with the single headlight not dual. My friend had an 89 FZR 1000 which he did a lot of work to, was really fast until he jumped it over a rise in the road and pushed the bottom of the oil pan into the bottom of the crank!

Yes, any Interceptors still around still are gorgeous. Husband and I were out one day and saw one, which could have been his old bike, so we followed it and found where they had parked. Not his bike, so we know there are a couple of them out there still. I really like that red white and blue color scheme.

@jkv45 the Kenny Roberts signature RZ350! Way cool. Back up 3 generations, I had a 1972 R5 350 2 stroke, 5 speed. ...previous generation to the old but very popular RD350 air cooled 6 speed. Yamaha sold a pantload of the RD's.

Have spare spark plugs and a wrench with you.....always. Sorry, I'm showing my age here.

The RZ was my second street bike.

Previous bike (1st street bike, 4th or 5th bike overall) was a RD 400.

RZs were fun, as long as you didn't want to go anywhere.

Ahhh... I had RZ350 for while at university in Santa Barbara. Roommates and I would go riding all over hills. Over to Ojai, down to Angeles Crest and back!

Hey @greg737 I'm very curious....do you discern any differences in noise, sound, speed, handling (or any other) between the 2?

Hey Gordon, You're asking, "What differences did Honda build into the two different sub-generation of the 5th Gen VFR800?"

Here are two "designed-in" differences:

#1. The catalyst element in the '00-'01 sub-generation's exhaust collector has the effect of muting the V-4's wonderful signature exhaust rumble. Honda made this change in the VFR's exhaust but didn't make any change in the OEM exhaust canister, the canister stayed the exact same across the entire four years of the 5th Generation. This resulted in the '00-'01 bikes being quieter than the '98-'99 bikes. So if you own a 5th Gen VFR and you want to hear the V-4 do its glorious rumble (namely 1-0-1-0-0-1-0-1-) you have to install a less restrictive canister on a '00-'01 than you would on a '98-'99 to get the same effect.

#2. Honda changed/redesigned the VFR's clutch between the two 5th Gen sub-generations. The '98-'99 bikes have a clutch stack that included a total of: 9 Friction Disks, 8 Drive Plates, 1 Judder Spring, and 1 Judder Spring Seat. The clutch stack on the '00-'01 bikes has: 8 Friction Plates, 7 Drive Plates, and does not have the Judder Spring or the Judder Spring Seat.

Here's a short excerpt from the press package Honda released along with the rollout of the its '00 model year, including the VFR800:
The Y2k Honda Press Information pack (ROW) said this about the new model's clutch:

"... Lighter Clutch Operation: The VFR also received improvements to its clutch design that improve its operation. The piston ratio and spring rate of its master cylinder were changed and the number of its clutch plates was reduced from nine to eight, resulting in lighter action and smoother gear change operation."

And while you didn't ask me which of the two 5th Gen sub-generations I like the best, my personal opinion is that the '98-'99 is better because, 1. it has a better, more visceral sound to it, and 2. although the clutch is heavier on the '98-'99 its action is nicely spread out across the lever's movement and therefore it's easier to modulate power to the wheel.

The RZ was my 2nd street bike too!

Dream bike was an '86 VFR 750.

But on my budget at the time I could only afford a used RZ. But at least it was well set up with good pipes and reeds and it could really rip! I had the solo seat cowl too.

But after that, that changed my dream bike. No longer did I lust after fat heavy 4 strokes. Give me a RZ500 or RG500 Gamma baby! And make it gray market street legal please.

My son loves his '98 VFR800. It has an aftermarket pipe on it which makes it louder - but not too loud to hear the gear drive cams. The combination, when it comes down the street, is amazing.

Probably the best sounding (4-stroke) motorcycle I've ever heard.

this thing....Freddie Spencer FWS1000 Honda RSC V4

Wow...never heard nothing like it, the hair on the back o' the neck stood up when it went by.

Was fortunate enough to see/hear it at Daytona 1982, in the Formula 1 class, or was it the 200? Can;t remember, regardless it was a tire shredding machine.

I'm looking for a youtube vid of it......nothing but pics and info.
