DIY: Installing No-Cut Diode kit from modmy250.com

In anticipation of a new product I'm making, I wanted to post a DIY. It's a diode kit so if you install 4 or more LED blinkers, you retain stock function from all the lights as well as the turn signal indicator.

Tools you will need:

10mm socket & socket wrench
small flat screwdriver (about as small as one that you fix glasses or a watch with)

First thing you will need to do is remove the Left fairing. Please see this DIY on how to do it.

Once the fairing is off, you should easily see the 2 harnesses you will need to disconnect. They are almost right up against the front cowl. In the first pic, you can see where it should be as well as the two unplugged. You will be removing the solid green wire from the 9 pin harness.

Here's another picture of which connector you will be removing in case you're a little unsure still.

In this picture, you can see I've stuck in my pick to bend the tab. You can use a small flat head screw driver or pick if you have one. Just push it in with one hand while gently pulling on the wire with the other hand. It will come out really easily. Notice that the pick is pushing into the harness on the right side of the connector. That's where the tab is.

Image of the green wire pulled out. Notice how the tab is all bent inwards.

Bend the tab back out so that it sits at an angle. You need to do this for the next step.

Now, insert the green wire into the smaller 3pin harness you unplugged earlier. There's an empty middle spot that will fit it perfectly. You should hear it click in. If you didn't bend the tab, the green wire will just be loose and not stay in the harness.

Now, all you have to do is grab the Diode kit and plug everything in. It will use the same stock connectors to keep as much of the install as easy as possible, just like my other products .

Here, you'll see the new connector installed into where the green wire used to be.

Pic of the new kit installed with the ground wire attached. Don't worry about the unwrapped diodes. I left them that way on purpose. The final product will have everything wrapped in heat shrink. Note: If the kit doesn't seem to work, try using a wire brush or sand paper on the mounting point. It needs a good ground for it to function.

Final product:

Hi Eric. The diode mod is for people who go remove their factory blinkers and install LED's for all 4 blinkers. Usually, if you only install 2, ie, just replacing the front blinkers with LED's, you don't need to install any diodes. When you replace all the blinkers, many people do integrated rear lights and front LED's, there seems to be a power bleed. The new LED's only take a fraction to work, so the left over power gets sent to the other set of blinkers. This causes the bike to flash all 4 blinkers at the same time, like hazard lights. The diodes prevent this power backwash so that the blinkers behave the way they're designed.

Here's another DIY that shows you how to do it, but you have to cut wires, solder connections and add a ring terminal. You also have to remove both front fairings and the front cowl to get access to the gauge's rear. With my kit, you just remove the left fairing and you're finished in under 15 minutes total.

Tri - nice, any chance you gonna have a GB for P&P LED rear turn signals too?! I'd be interested in this and P&P LED rear turn signals.

I haven't given much thought to rear LED turn signals. Most people opt for integrated rear lights. Are there any you would like to see turned into a kit?

how about these LED's

i like integrated tails, but i don't think they are the most visible at times. and i would still keep the signals on to make it appear more in compliance with being street legal in case pig was to ride behind me.

Those would be ok, but they don't seem all that bright. Can I suggest either of these?

I'm super brain dead right now so I can't seem to figure this out...

but just to make triple sure before I take my bike apart...the actual diode is already in the kit you sell right? I don't have to buy a diode and add it to the kit you make?

I got my order today and when I was looking over everything I started thinking, "Wasn't there a diode I needed?"

Yeah, it is. It's under the black shrink-wrap in the last pic of the OP.

If you look at the small black/grey cylinder connected to the blue wire in the next-to-last pic int he OP, that's one of the two diodes in the kit. The other is under the black electrical tape next to it.

They're very small, about the diameter of the wire Tri seems to have used, so they're easily overlooked.

I have a weird problem. I installed this kit and I have 2 regular signals in the front and the 2 rear signals are leds mounted to license plate.

1. If I switch the turn signal switch to right then front right signal turns on and stays solid not blinking and the rear right doesn't even turn on.

2. If I switch the signal switch to the left then left rear signal turns on and stays solid. the front left is off.

3. if I turn the switch to the right then on the dash nothing light up while if I switch to the left then the dash indicator light turns on and stays on not flashing.

What are the fixes?

thanks.

P.S.- Just got the Tridon flasher mentioned in other posts and plugged it in. with the new flasher and diode kit all the lights stopped working. with diode kit disconnected if I switch to the right then right front and left rear blink normally. If I switch to the left nothing turns on.

The green wire that I removed from the factory harness wont fully seat in your connector(almost like its too big), and I don't see any wires in the other side so I didn't worry about it as long as its not falling out(its wedged in there pretty good, and its not gonna fall out on its own at least. Am I missing the wire on the other side of that connector or did you you just stick the green wife in there to keep it out of the way? Also, IDK if its a change on the '11's or what but my green wire is actually two green wires both connected to the same connector.

Do you mean the spot where you insert the wire is a little too big? If so, this is normal. Mine was a bit larger too, but it stays in and works perfectly. Just make sure to prop that tab up like he states to do.

As for the two in one wire, Im not too sure, but I think my wire was slightly different looking too. As long as you test your blinkers before putting back on the fairings, and they work, you will be fine.

No the other way around, the hole in the plug is too small for the wire/s. The gold plated connector is too big to fit in the harness. Like I said its wedged in there as far as I could get it and doesnt appear to be coming out, and everything is working fine, I just wanted to verify that i was just being put there to keep it out of the way as there is nothing on the other plug to connect to at that spot in the harness.

I just wanted to say, I put in this mod last week and it was easy as pie; I have a CF12ANL-01 flasher from SuperbrightLEDs.com, and Rizoma Zero 11's on all four corners... No issues. Installation took only a couple of minutes. Beats the pants off of soldering!

The relay is literally, unplug the old one, and plug in the new one; then zip tie or glue the new one in place.

DIode install done...but

After removing the connectors I come to find out that I have 2 green wires plug into the #9 connector, not one as the photo indicates. Now I connected everything and all works well, front and rear, horn works, dash lights all come on and the bike starts.

Quick question, does the headlight come on when you turn the key or does the engine need to be started before the head light comes on. With engine running low and high beam work , but the two green wires in the #9 hole bother me. Bike is a 2012.

I just did my diode kit last week on my 2011, it also had 2 green wires in that spot. Tri said he's seen this before, I've had no problems with mine either.
Also, my headlight doesn't come on until the engine is running.

it happens on my 2012 as well. I think its just how our bikes are made now.

Quick question here,

I am about to install the proton flush mount turn signals. I understand that you do not need to change any wiring for one set of LED's but I am thinking of future intergrated tail light. If I purchase this kit, this will be the only diode thing I will have to do if I get an intergrated tail light and led turn lights correct?
