I'd be up for either, but the backroads look pretty fun. I haven't ridden any of those roads up there so I'd have fun on either.

Just let me know where to meet and when to get there.

Although there are some barriers for me, I'm not officially out yet, but not confident rough to expect to be planned around. As I mentioned before, my issue is physical (back), which I should have a rough idea about the day before.

I'm also trying to recruit another rider who would need to take the day off work, so not sure about him yet.

We're both from Folsom, so the idea of meeting in Placerville is certainly a convenient one for us, although I don't expect our votes to count for much if we can't commit yet. Of the routes already discussed my preference is the beautiful, winding, well maintained mountain passes. I like twisties too, just not the slow chewed-up roads that rattle teeth and screws loose.

If I'm able to make it I'd be planning a day ride only.... hopefully I'll be in better shape next year for an overnighter.

Hurm, maybe I can meet in the middle

How about a half day of mountain passes (Echo, Luther, Carson) then lunch in Volcano or Sutro (?), followed by an after lunch romp through the forest roads? The ones I was on last weekend were mostly smooth, often two lane, back roads. Some of the smaller ones had light debris (branches, trees, needles, cones) but very very few potholes and certainly no rattling of kidneys into my throat.

I like meeting in Placerville, seems to be a good start point. Think it takes me an hour and a half to get there, so 8 at the earliest. The Shell station there at the junction of 49 and 50?

If that works, I might change a bit, take us off of 50, go up Groveland Rd to Wentworth Springs, then to Ice House and come back into 50 to continue on up to Echo.

Hi, I'm in for a ride on 8/8! I was visiting with Alan Smith today and he may be able to join us also. I probably would head up to Groveland on Friday. There are lots of options so I'm fine with winging it for whatever route we choose. Just let me know where and when we will be there meeting up for the start and I'll be there ( barring disaster).
all the best, GA

Yep, the Kyburz Fire was 75 acres and 100% contained. http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4408/#

YAY!! It'll be awesome to meet you!

I'm good with 8 am if that works for everyone else. Does anyone know a good restaurant place for breakfast?

8am in Placerville works for me too (Last meeting point mentioned was Shell station at hwy 50 & hwy 49). I'm excited about the current route. I've been on all these sections at one point or another (I think), and remember each section to be very good. It should have something for everyone across a range of skill levels.

For anyone still on a carbureted 250, I'm sorry. Unless you're jetted for altitude you should still be OK though for over 90%+ of the ride, but my old 250 always struggled at the passes. It's only a buzz-kill for a few minutes though.

I don't know of any restaurants in Volcano, but there are a number in Jackson, which would be on my way back home. Unless someone is "in the know," I don't mind playing it by ear. I'm sure everyone will have smart phones these days, and I'll have an old Garmin for backup (all good to find food).

About gear: is anyone bringing a pump or other form of air? I'll have a tire repair kit with me (reamer, rope, and glue).

Unless I'm in pain the day of, I plan on being there. If the ride is painful I may bail at Ice House, but if I get out of my seat enough on the first part I should have enough movement in my back/hips to be OK... it's all a balance - no pun intended. The first half should have plenty of opportunity to get off the seat and scrub those tires. If I do have to bail the morning of I'll leave a post here so no one is waiting.

EDIT: The guy I invited can't get off work for Saturday. I guess Sunday is his day off. Sunday is actually better for me too next week, but I can still make Saturday work.

Ok, looked at Cal Fire. Only two blazes are in the area and looks like the Washington Fire is a non issue at this point. Sierra Front reports: Containment Date: 99% contained as of 07/25/2015. Cal Fire reports that the Lowell Fire is 85% contained and looking at full containment by Monday. Not sure how smokey it will be, but with the Rocky Fire over 65k acres, any wind from the west is going to be ick.

National Weather Service seems to be showing a fair day with temps around the 70s-80s (60s up in the higher elevations and 90s down in the valley), with light cloud cover and a slim chance of precipitation (<20%), and very low wind speeds (<10mph).

Let's all meet at the Shell on the corner of 49 and 50 at 8am, with the plan of grabbing a light breakfast somewhere nearby, and being on the road by 9am.

To answer the question on supplies, I'll have my tail bag with a pump, sticky string, spare headlight, oil, chain lube, and first aid/road rash kit. I also will have my Spot running.

Very tempted to come along for this ride. I was just up at wentworth springs sunday on my cbr but have yet to on my 250, which I think will be a blast. I just need to find the time to re-rivet my chain.

Sounds like we might have some fast riders along. Cool!

If we do, I'll let those who want to ride fast take off first with predetermined meet ups. I'm a C group rider, so will lead anyone who doesn't know the area or who just wants to putter.

All I ask is an experienced rider doing sweep that way if someone is super new or uncofrtable in the twisties, they won't be alone and can focus on riding safely vs feeling like they have to keep up. I really watch my mirrors for those behind me and try to set the pace to the slowest rider. But in curves I might end up pulling ahead a bit and will regroup on straights.

Or if someone has a headset, I loved it when @antiant was in the middle letting me know how the two riders behind her were doing.

I can't say I'm an "experienced" rider but since our ride last year I have picked up a SMH-10 and I would be totally comfortable riding towards the back.

I just have to figure out how my headset works as a communicator. So far I have only used it for music and the occasional phone call.

Pairing is super easy, you just hold down the jog dial until it beeps and says "Intercom pairing" then you either leave it on full communication and just chat back and forth or you can tap the jog dial to turn it oon and off so you can listen to music in between chatting. I ride with a friend who has a 10 so am used it it by now.

If you don't mind the rear, I would really appreciate having a good sweeper who can keep an eye on everyone. Thank you!

C Group is a track term for the slow beginners. I'm not quick, but I am steady. I rarely use my brakes going into curves because I don't accelerate much coming out of them. When with others, I don't try to round off my tires, but will stick with the speed limit and stay there. I've found that faster riders will easily pass me, but they won't lose me since I can keep up with them in the corners while they are braking hard. Though, one guy was fast and good and I only stayed with him for about three corners before he was long gone.

I"m getting excitted about our ride on Sat! So, so far it looks like the lineup is : Nevadawolf, Headshrink, iamjacob, algs26 and me. Maybe Hoons54. I still have to check and see if Alan will be joining us. I had to repair my aerotrunk and replace my headlight but now everything is good to go. I'll bring some tools and my usual travel kit.

Me too! Also looking forward to seeing your bike in person.

It's an oil change and chain maintenance for me tonight. Now the real trick will be to focus at work for the next day and half without daydreaming about the Sierra Nevadas...

BTW: I'll be on my red CBR500r, as the Ninjette has been in boxes for over a year.

So it is raining on this side of the hill, but looks like all the forecasts agree it is going to be sunny and warm tomorrow.

Washington and Lowell Fires are still the only two in the area and the wind looks like it might be taking the Rocky Fire smoke up north east of us.

Looks like there are two restaurant places really close to the gas station, Buttercup Pantry (3.5 stars on Yelp) and California Kitchen (4.5 stars). If anyone is particular about food, thumb through Yelp and see if something stands out for you. We'll decide when everyone arrives at the gas station.

See all of you tomorrow morning at 8am at the Shell, 151 Main St, Placerville, CA (530) 622-3113!

Checking in. Thanks everybody for joining the ride.

That streamliner sure attracts attention.

I'll have to look over the video and photos to see if I got anything good.

Good times today, everybody.

I can't believe I've been a Ninjette member since 2008 and haven't actually met anyone until TODAY! I'm so glad I finally got to meet you all, and participate in irl. Thanks again Teri for arranging the ride.

Today was also the inaugural ride for my Mobius dash-cam, so I thought I'd share this capture of Alan's new girl friend - LOL.

Thank you all for joining me! I had a great time and am very happy to have met everyone. You all rock!

Sorry about the slower speed. I misread the gap between me and everyone and thought I was going too fast. My bad, and I will do better next time.

Ride report later when I get home!

Thank you all again!

Ok, so I wasn't the only one to think she was hot then. The screen grab doesn't do justice.

Thanks to everyone that came out to ride today, it was nice to be able to meet everyone. A very special thanks to Teri for putting it together again this year.

I can't believe how many heads are turned by Alan's streamliner. Bringing up the rear of the pack, I could see the reaction of nearly every single person we passed.

Hey everybody. My girlfriend and I were on Hwy 88 today, in the car, going eastbound a little after 4 p.m.. I was detoured around an accident to a side road. Re-entering Hwy 88 at Buckhorn, I caught a glimpse of two sport bikes and two streamliners in a Shell station. I figured it was you folks so I tried making a u-turn. By the time traffic cleared and I turned around the last two bikes took off westbound, the streamliners. Missed you by just a matter of seconds. I was going to stop and introduce myself. LOL!

Yeah, I knew that might have been a possibility for your route. We went up to Markleeville, then back to Stockton on Ca 4. I've never done Ca 4 on a bike east of Big Trees so went up to check it out. I may do that ride within the next couple weeks. We hit rain, did you too? Came down pretty good for a bit.

Aw man! That would have been awesome to have met you!

Awoke today at 5am. What lunatic suggested 8am for a meet up?! Checked the weather and, while clear, the stations along Hwy 50 were showing the summits were 43°. egads! Headed out, fully bundled up with heated gear and a fresh cup of coffee warming my belly. It was a beautiful morning, with a blood red sun just coming up over the eastern mountains (smoke makes sunrises/sunsets pretty). Figures that the weekend I took off the pinlock was the weekend there was fog and high humidity. Spooner Lake was completely coated in low lying clouds. Shivered my way to Echo Summit when the first few rays of sun broke through the haze and gave me the mental boost to "warm" up and up over the mountains! A smooth ride down the mountain and soon was at the Shell. Had just gotten my helmet off to fill up when two ... odd ..bikes rolled up. Crazy cool seeing @greenaero's and Alan's modified Ninjettes. A short while later, hail hail the gang's all here!

Here we are meeting at the Buttercup Pantry in Placerville. @algs26 is here, just parked across the lot.

Bit longer in the chatting than planned (but really, who needs plans anyway?) and we were off! Up Georgetown Rd for a quick warmup before heading out Wentworth Springs Rd. An hour later, I pulled over to stretch and chat some while up on the ridge.

First break along Wentworth Springs Rd with the damage from the King Fire around us.

Headed on, taking Ice House Rd and watched as all the Jeep traffic headed out towards Rubicon. The day was warming up nicely, with some clouds forming in the distance and the smoke light despite the haze around us. Traffic up 50 was annoyingly full, but mostly moving until we were headed towards the gas station for another break. Bumper to bumper stand still traffic. Alan slipped forward and suggested just going on - but hey, I remember there is a Tahoe Rim trail head up the road. The clouds and smoke got thicker as we dropped into Hope Valley but thinned out nicely when we crossed over Carson Pass. While cruising down Hwy 88, I failed to recall a gas station in Volcano, so pulled over at a near overlook to revise plans.

Photo op at the Hwy 88 overlook. @headshrink had to move his poor Honda forward as the Ninjas were obscuring it.

Don't jump! @greenaero and Alan

Headed on towards Pioneer, simply looking for a gas station with food nearby. As we came into town, I spotted a Shell station and a maybe restaurant. But my attentions was quickly focused ahead as the road was covered in orange cones with several folks standing in the road blocking it. Turns out, a big wreck happened Wednesday night and was still being dealt with. We flipped around and I spotted a small sign advertising BBQ BURGERS. There! The Amador Cafe turned out to be a neat little BBQ joint with a pretty good pulled pork sandwich!

Swung by the Shell station after lunch to compare fuel economy (the streamliners won, of course!) and we all separated to head home. @iamjacob, @headshrink, @algs26, @greenaero, and Alan (does he have an account here?) went west towards Jackson, while @Old Guy on a '08 and I headed east towards some goat roads.

We played a bit on the paved roads between Hwy 88 and Hwy 50, before coming out onto Mormon Emigrant Trail and turning towards Sly Park. Hung out a bit by the side of the road just chatting before we too said farewell and safe travels. A quick pop over the mountain back to Carson to finish out my awesome day.

Thank you all again so very much!!

My route today:

That really could have been catastrophic, regarding both fire and environmental issues. That area is pretty populated. The detour was interesting, as I'd been up Hwy 88 a zillion times, and had never traveled those side roads.

Alan & Vic were figuring out mpg at the end of the trip, but I didn't fill-up there to compute. My fuel light was blinking when I got home, so I did the computations then. My door-to-door numbers for the cbr worked out to: 71.74 mpg over 247 miles.

Great ride! Thanks to everyone for making this ride a lot of fun. Kudos to Teri for organizing this! The weather was good, the traffic torrible and the people fantastic! It was awesome to meet more Ninjetters and share our passion for ridng together. I was very glad Alan was able to join us and he sends his best regards.

I got home about noon today. Alan and I continued our ride down 88 after after we parted ways in Buckhorn. We continued south on 49 then turned east on 120, ending up at my vacation home in Groveland. We headed home enjoying some cool backroads between Knight's Ferry and Escalon. It was all was just fabulous!! The only negatives were an oncoming cager oblviously turning left in front of us causing us to take evasive action and I got stung by some insect through my mesh jacket .

I can hardly wait til we put together another ride.

@ NevadaWolf, your lead pace was fine, I saw the same gaps behind us and you reacted appropriately.

the fuel economy results:

Alan 116.9 mpg, 2005 streamliner
Vic 86.1 mpg , 2005 partially streamlined ( fender, windscreen, aerotrunk)
Chris 74.2 mpg, new gen 250 , 15/41 gearing
Bob 71.7 mpg, Honda CBR500
Teri 60.7 mpg, new gen 250
Jacob 51.2 mpg, new gen 250
* Alan algs26 , 300, either my mistake, incomplete top-off or someother issue, or we have a future Vetter Challenge champion lurking in our midst.
173 miles/1.44 gal= 120.1 mpg , gotta submit that one for drug-testing
Thanks for everyone participating in helping us get some valuable side-by side comparision data.

I recorded 165.7 miles and 1.441 gallons (still 115mpg though). My lifetime odometer difference matches the trip. But I always let the pump shut itself off so it may have shut off early. Also, I didn't do a visual check.

I might have the gas gauge on camera...

I would guess you're stopping about 1/2 a gallon early by letting it shutoff itself, and not easing it up to the bottom of the filler thingy. But if this is your standard practice I suspect it may indicate a large variation between shutoff points between different pumps.
