My bike crashed...

...and just my bike!

The story: I drove my car to work, as I don't have a parking pass for the lot for my bike yet. I left my bike in my apartment parking lot under the cover with lock as usual (I chose not to store it until bad weather so I can just hop on and go, instead of driving to get it). A police office responded to another call in the complex and when backing out backed straight into it and knocked it over; my neighbors said he didn't see it. He had already clocked out for his shift when I got home, so I haven't gotten to speak to him yet. Any chance the police department will pay for it, and a frame check to make sure it is straight, without me reporting it to my insurance to be reimbursed?

I didn't pay a lot or have my pre-gen for long, but I already loved him! Arghh!

The good news: the worst damage appears to be a bent clutch lever that can be fixed easy other than broken plastics (which it had some, but not that much). I had also just taken the obligatory "I just bought a bike, loooook it's purty!" pictures, so I will have a good comparison.

Ohhhh dang, that completely sucks. At least you have witnesses so you seem to have the upper hand in negotiations. You are right, that tank bag will have to wait until you sort this out first.

Aren't you glad it was nicked before you got it/him?

Most likely the frame is bent beyond repair. I'll take it off your hands for you though

All things considered, if my bike were to be knocked over in a parking lot, having it turn out to be an on-duty cop is probably one of the best outcomes. It will almost certainly be covered appropriately.

It seems 9 out of 10 times that a parked bike is knocked over, the owner never finds out how it happened and they are completely on their own to deal with it (along with their own insurance company).

Did he leave the scene? Sounds like an arrest warrant is needed.

My buddy's car just got sideswiped by a Boston fire truck last month. They just asked him for one estimate from a body shop (which was way, way too high) and gave him a check literally the week after it happened. He ended up finding someone to fix it for about half the price and kept the rest. If I had to choose someone to knock my bike over, I'd definitely choose a cop of firefighter, I think you're gonna be well taken care of.

I feel better that I will probably get the damage fixed, but it still sucks to not be able to ride for a few days. I shouldn't even be complaining.

@Jiggles pay shipping or drive to KY, pay me $1800, and I'll have it signed over when you arrive. ;-) In all honesty, I doubt the frame is bent, but for the sake of parents-not-annoying-me I would like to have it checked out anyway.

That is certainly not worth the effort for a bike as damaged as yours!
