Please help - oil leak!

Hi -

Broke the left side stator cover in a minor accident.

I got a new cover, moved the coils into it... reinstalled the cover with a new gasket... now I have a oil leak, like 1 drop every 5 seconds... seems the oil is coming out of the rubber seal that the wires go thru.

I checked the rubber seal.. it seems to be in good condition.

what's the solution?

I have poured some Lucas engine oil stop leak in, probably won't work.

should I replace the rubber seal? or apply some kind of sealant when I reinstall with another gasket?

thanks!

Hi and welcome!

First, are you sure leak comes from rubber grommet for stator wires? To confirm, clean off entire cover of all oil. So clean you can eat off it. Then start up engine and look for where fresh oil appears.

If it indeed is coming out of the rubber grommet, make sure it is installed properly. Did you take photos when disassembling so you can re-install with correct orientation? It's rectangular in shape, so it's possible to re-install with incorrect rotation.

When re-installing, install grommet first. Make sure its upper and inner lip clears and overlaps engine-case properly. It's labyrinth seal, so there should be 3x 90-degree bends to get out, which prevents oil escaping without any sealant or pressure needed. Also make sure its outer edge is perfectly flush and even with engine-case before continuing on. Then install gasket, then case cover. Even with brand-new rubber grommet, if you don't do order-of-operations and orientations correctly, it will still leak. Fix problem, not symptoms.

thanks... will let the Lucas run a tank or so... and take it apart to check based on your suggestions.

please get that stop leak out of there asap. that stuff is bad bad bad.
it clots up like blood, which can stop or slow a leak, and it clogs all kinds of stuff up. if you have an oil cooler, it going to reduce the ability for the cooler to cool the hot oil down.
there is no mechanic in a bottle, like danno said, fix the issue, not the symptom.
