"No ATGATT proselytizing"

Today I was browsing the subreddits and decided to check out the r/Harley just to see what was going on with them... I then noticed this:
(I circled in yellow)

Alright, I get it if these guys just refuse to wear all the gear, I get it. It's whatever, their choice, gotcha. But to literally BAN anyone for posting anything about the safety of ATGATT???? That's ridiculous!

P.S for those who don't know what proselytizing (like me lol) it's this:
Proselytizing:
convert or attempt to convert (someone) from one religion, belief, or opinion to another.

on any motorcycle forum it is pretty much a surefire way to start a heated argument that is not necessary let alone a Harley one.

Yup. Most people make their own decisions. No need to preach to anyone. Ride your own ride etc etc.

I've actually noticed more of the cruiser riders around here wearing full face helmets this year. Don't know why, maybe some of them are actually realizing that wearing safety gear while riding a motorcycle isn't such a bad idea.

Yes, to a point. I think it is helpful that new riders are made aware of what's out there. Of course it is their own personal decision when they get on the bike, but they should make that decision with all available knowledge. That amount of knowledge as a newbie is completely dependent on the people you ride with and sites like this. Some people aren't aware of hearing protection even being a thing until they see someone else with earplugs and wonder why. Some people might not be aware that there are many different types of gear, at all different price points and materials, that have all different levels of comfort and/or ease of wearing.

Proselytizing has a negative connotation for me at least, meaning that you shouldn't continue to shove your own point of view down someone else's throat, even after they have made it clear that they aren't particularly interested in hearing your point of view. I can certainly see how discussion like that would get out of hand on certain boards, even this one from time to time.

^ +1,

I understand if they wanna reduce any unnecessary arguments and spam. However, apparently an EMT over there posted asking why they don't wear helmets (lol) and he got banned from the subreddit. He seemed like a respectful guy, just wanted to ask why and share what he's seen.

Apparently of the 3 people that he saw who wore no helmet 2 died. I cannot even imagine how difficult it is to do his job..

It's reddit, I'm sure they get fifteen threads every day that are just "OMG HARLEY IDIOTS, WHY U NO ATTGAT?! U SO STUPID!!!11!!one!!" If it were to come up in the normal course of conversation (as it does so often here), I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem.

Hmm... that's interesting cause I see way more ATGATT nazi's in this forum than on the motorcycle subreddit.

That's probably because they get banned.

To be fair to r/harley, r/motorcycles used to have an extremely vocal ATGATT crowd, which was turning a lot of people off the subreddit, hence the creation of r/calamariraceteam (think about it), and some of these anti-ATGATT rules popping up in other moto reddits.

Personally, I'm a full-blown ATGATT nutjob, but I can understand why people might not want to be made to feel guilty about their life choices.

On the flipside, I'm pretty sure that most of the people who aren't actually ATGATT don't properly understand the risks that they're taking on. Many people say they understand the risks, but in my experience, most people believe, deep down, that they're special, and that it couldn't happen to them. I've seen too many "if only I had been wearing gear" threads to ever get on my motorcycle without full head-to-toe protection. But of course I'd say that, since I'm a crazy ATGATT nutjob.

Certainly, I agree completely with you. People should be able to make their own decisions as long as it's an informed decision.

i used to encourage people to wear gear. the exposure to non-moto-people to the gory results of crashing without gear is detrimental to most riders. but then i realized, it's just part of nature. let the stupid ones lead themselves to death. don't intervene with stupidity unless it's a child. those adults who choose to wear no gear except a bug rag on their face are well aware of the consequences. they are just ignorant about their own abilities. everyone thinks they are rossi. so let nature take its course.
