New to forum and new owner of a 86 250

Folks, Nice to be a member of a like minded group. Just got a '86 Ninja 250 from a friend and it has been sitting for about 20yrs...give or take. Currently in the restoration mode. Removed the gas tank and the old gas that was in it...removed the rust with the apple cider vinegar solution. Currently have some seals for the petcock and rear brake master cylinder on order.

Currently looking for a replacement radiator...old one is rusted out at the bottom hose connection. Ones on ebay look a little suspicious and not sure about the new racing ones I see for sale. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Mark and welcome to Ninjette!!!

I've got an '86 too! Let's see some pics of your bike!

There was guy that had really nice one that posted it here. He ended up tearing it completely apart and sold as parts. Really bastard move.

I would replace all the rubber o-rings, gaskets and pieces. Cooling system, air box, bumpers in the rear etc. etc. The rubber of that age is usually rotten. I am no expert but I read the valve seats of those years are on the soft side. So valve checks , compression testing would be in order. Clutch basket bushings might be in a bad shape too. Some were sitting in oil - bottom , some out - top. You might want to upgrade it to the newgen basket with springs. Wiring and electrical in general requires good check at that age, cracks and lost insulation.

You had to bring that up...

That was the best '86 I've ever seen. He wanted to turn it into a race bike IIRC.

We pleaded with him to just find any other old Ninja to strip, but I believe we were unsuccessful and he resented our persistence.

What a shame...

EDIT: Sorry - I forgot to say "welcome" to narco!

Welcome aboard!

Love those early Ninjas. I was in my teens during mid 80s, and I just miss the old 250s, like the Honda (NS 250 ?), and the Yamaha SRX 250. With those beautifully horrible pastel California "splash/airbrush" graphics. But those were smoking hot bikes for a learner my age back then!

Love to see the progress you get to do for it.

If someone can confirm that the radiators are the same, I have 3 or 4 sitting on the shelf.( off of running, 200X year models) if so, I'll take a look at them.

If they fit/good condition, you can have one.
