06 Dragon Ninja project

Hey guys, and gals!

Picked up my first Ninja 250. ( As an MSF school mechanic I call all the bikes "mine", but this is my first personal property 250 Ninja) Thing is a hoot, and I got it for a screaming deal. A friend of mine, and his wife are moving overseas, so they gave me an offer, I couldn't say "No" to.

Picked it up for $250.00! An '06, with only 15 k miles.

I don't like the ratttle can "safety" colors. I have a powdercoat booth/ small shop, so this will be fun. Since the bike is for my girlfriend, and she is into dragonflies, dragons, Game of Thrones..I figure I can get something taylored to suite her, while not being overly girly, and modern enough to fit the lines of the bike.

i have a few different schemes/ideas. So the end graphics may not look anything like what I posted. She loves the concept, but we have a while before settling on a design. Figured I would post up, and share some ideas. I'll be adding more colors/ideas as we go.

Off to start stripping, and blasting!

Doh! Forgot to take pics of the dirty work. Put some TLC, elbow grease into cleaning, de-greasing, rinse, repeat. So far, all hand controls, foot controls, triple tree, forks, rims, swing-arm have al been cleaned up, looking new. All of the components have been sand blasted as well. With the exceptions of rims and swing-arm. ( Don't fit in my blast cabine..err..box)

I will provide before/after pics of the powder coating. But that will be in a few days.

More or less the same concept, just a different shape. ( I am working on another design as well. I have the colors, just not sure how I want the flow yet.)

I have never see those fairings before I wouldn't change them for the world my friend. Maybe re-paint but I love that old school color scheme. I'm not even a fan of yellow, at all but it's sharp. And damn I got an '06 with almost 16k for $700 here I thought I did something lol. Inbox me so we can talk price for those fairings! Haha jk I know you intend to use them but man don't paint them different! Leave them!

Did the fairings come off another year? Noticed your headlight fairing is triangular in shape. All the 06's I've come across are still square. Anyway man keep us posted I have the same year bike with basically the same miles, that alone has me interested! You paid $250 but I got the full muzzy
If your gf wants a louder bike (a very clean loud) I would endorse Muzzy all day. Came with the bike.
Damn it I love your fairing color scheme! Hate to see it go.

Thanks for the input, y'all! I appreciate it.

The upper bodywork was a junkyard special, found by the prior owner, while fixing it up for his wife. I don't know the manufacturer of front fairing, but it is a full fiberglass race body. It did not have a headlight cut-out. My friend wanted something different than the stock rectangle shape. (Headlight is stock, just not the hole.) It really through me off as well.

I will be replacing the exhaust at some point. All of the packing was removed by the farm boys my friend purchased it from, 6 years ago. A little raspy. But I'll get it replaced.

The gas tank is also an intersting story. I was commenting on shape/condition. He said " don't run a magnet across it! And dont look on the inside!" This was his first Bondo job ever.! Have to say, he did a tremendous job on the outside, and doing the rust removal/Kreem application on the inside.

I do like the paint design. I don't like the colors though. Maybe I can convince the lady to keep the design the same, just change coloring. By the way, IF I do end up changing it to something drastic, I was going to do it the "dip your car" way ( peelable paint) This way "I" don't jack the panels and tank up. :P

Looks awesome!

Purple & green always goes well together! Kinda like blue & yellow, red & yellow, etc. I like the 1st dragon better.

I'm super pissed. After hours of cleaning, de-greasing, washing, re-washing, drying, and prepping up my paint area, then using test sprays for each color...

EVERY SINGLE CAN of black, is leaving rubber filaments/ specks, eveyrhere. This isn't the heavy duty rough texture, it's the high gloss cans. White, green, and purple are not doing it. Glad all I have to do is let it dry, then peel off the sadness. :/

So. If I use any color can, I get no filaments/spatter, but it's going to take me about another 15 cans of white for a base coat, to cover up the original blue/yellow design. Maybe , I'll just have a local auto/moto painter do the base coat.

I get it. It 's Plasti-dip. ...it's going to have a rubbery finish.( not a pro-gloss acres deep paint.) I have used it before ( black) but have not had spatters everywhere. All 9 cans of black do this.

I MIGHT try a little degreaser to "melt" it. But I'll wait for a day, if someone else has a better solution to knock off the spatters.

Scotch-brite pads to the rescue! A little elbow grease , but it's knocking the inconsistencies down.

Oh man that poor paint. I'm sorry man but this saddens me. I really dug that color scheme and I've never seen it before. I think you had something nice. Perhaps your finished product will bring me around. Using spray paint? On the tank even?

You are in luck.

The plasti-dip, did not come out looking good at all. (Due too several reasons. Mostly me, but underlying areas on the bike as well ) Airtech and other companies still make body kits for this, soooo the blue and yellow wll be saved, ( and Re-done!) the new dragon design will go onto clean body work. ( allowing me time to focus on cleaning up the bike, and other bits.) Will be some time before paint updating. But the blue/yellow will remain.

Finally got to some powder coating.

Only the fork tube lowers were powder coated in gloss black with clear coat afterwards.

Swing arm, dog bones, handlebar risers, upper triple clamp...

1 layer flat black base coat.
3 layers of metallic purple.
3 layers of clear coat.

I am very happy with the results. Dark/ shadows, all pieces look black. In the sun/various angles......PURPLE!

notes: each photo has several stages of lighting. To show off the lighting coloration. This is the finished result. These are not photos undergoing each process. Also, I missed pre-dusting before the photos, so there is some powder coat dust on the pieces. They wipe off. Also I did not remove the ignition, as this will be the triple clamp that my ignition will be swapped to. ( my bike finally has a license plate, and riding on The road.)

So any pieces you see here, are my spares that will be swapped out, and then those parts will be cleaned up, and colored as "new" stock/ OEM colors.

For the record, my camera phone doesn't do justice of the color. What is vibrant purple, looks almost like a "cola" color. Trust me, it's not pepsi cola purple. ;D

I didn't realize you were using that stuff. My 250 was coated with it when I got it. It didn't take long before my legs rubbed it off of the side panels and tank where they contacted. Also, gasoline dissolves it very quickly. It is not something I'd ever use on something I wanted to look good.

It was mainly a "mock up" (unless it came out exceptionally well.) And.. I liked the layoit, but so many flaws, didn't justify pictures. But the concept, and lines looked good, physically on the bike. In the meantime, all of my spares are being powdercoated, both as "OEM" factory colors, and the dragon design. This way the blue/yello design will always be swappable.. ( but I will re-do the design so it is more vibrant, and polished.)

Project on hiatus for a while.

All of my spares, and the shop I had my tools, were lost in hurricane Harvey.

But I did pull the bike from the shop. and kept it locally. While cars were getting flooded in water, the ninjette was a beautiful, and nimble "scout" vehicle for managing houstons flooded roads.

The shop is a loss, but the bike is not.

All in all, I have family, safety, and vehicles are all dry. I am one of the few lucky ones who didn't have a real loss in anything that couldn't be replaced.

Glad the bike and cars or OK, but loss of tools is a big blow; they are sort of sacred. Have friends in Houston who had 45 feet of water in their house/garage. Major emotional trauma.
