Mid-size trucks

I’m in the market for a new mid size truck. I’ve researched the Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, GMC Canyon and the not yet available Ford Ranger.
What truck do you recommend and why?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Was looking at a Tacoma myself but decided to wait and see how the Ranger looked when it comes out. The thing about the Tacoma is that while it's a good truck the design just looks like it's 10 years old already while it's new.

But the one huge benefit to the Tacoma, for me at least, it's still available in a manual transmission. And it's a very good one at that. I generally hate automatic transmissions, and the way it seems to take an eternity to decide what gear to be in when I tromp on the gas.

Although Ford already has a website setup https://www.ford.com/trucks/ranger/2019/, I’m waiting to see it in person and get more details like power and fuel economy.
@Zaph42 thanks for your input.

It’s really hard to go wrong with a Toyota... I like fords f150! My Dodge Ram has never given me many problems; but I still think the best of the bunch is a Toyota

Some of my friends have tried to convince me that for a couple grand more than a midsize truck I could get a full size F150. I tell them I don’t need a full size and what’s driving me to the midsize trucks is the increased fuel mileage. The diesel takes the prize in that arena.
Thanks for your input,

What's driving me away from full size trucks is that I don't want to make three Y turns to get into a parking spot. Plus I only have a 2 car garage that has a hell of a lot more than 2 cars in it. Fitting a F150 in there would seriously infringe on my 2 bikes area.

And finally I'd lose the ability of teasing my friends with big trucks about compensating for their small wieners.

LMAO! I happen to be very comfortable with my masculinity. I don’t need to compensate for anything so I’m looking at practicality.
There are some guys at work that buy full size 4 wheel drive trucks, put on a lift kit, big tires and they never leave the paved roads. What a waste!!!

Those are the ones I call "overcompensation" trucks....

Riding a bicycle in town here, was keeping pace with one due to stoplights. That was fun.

Mine mostly gets the paved road treatment. That's why you also get an offroad truck that is meant to be beat up.

i am a Ford and Mack Trucks diesel mechanic, i would shy away from diesel, personally. they (can) get a slight higher fuel mileage, at the expense of higher cost of maintenance, and repairs as well. plus with 2010 and newer you'll be adding DEF fluid to the vehicle. an after treatment system will run you approx 3-4 grand when it goes out. most filters in passenger size vehicles cannot be cleaned and must be replaced about 150,000 miles. so at that point you'd either shell out over 3,000 bucks, or delete the truck, then risk DOT giving you a hefty ticket one day when they see some black smoke from your tail pipe.
stay gasoline. of the 15 techs at my shop, none drive a diesel..
turbo going to run you 2 grand, and it could send debris through the engine when the turbo fails, and the price is going sky high at that point. the cost out weighs the benefit.. by a long shot

i see 10,000 dollar repairs all day long. shoot, mess around and put some DEF in the fuel tank by mistake, and thats going to run you 8-12 grand right there.

Thank you so very much for your expert advice! I was considering the GMC Canyon with the diesel because of the increased fuel mileage. Thanks to your post I can see that the slightly higher fuel mileage is not worth 4+ grand extra plus the extra cost of maintenance.
What are your thoughts on the new Ford Ranger? Is it worth the wait or should I go with the Canyon V6? Btw I’m hopping the ranger will be available in crew cab with a long bed. I hate the look of the short beds. It looks like it was chopped to make room for the crew cab to keep the same wheel base.

Ummm....

How about telling us what you are planning to do with said truck. Perhaps a mid-sized truck isn't what you need, or maybe it is.

Impossible question...

Great question!
Will be my daily driver with occasional visits to Home Depot and haul bags of mulch (usually no more than 15). Also towing a small bike trailer.
I need the mpg for my 150 mile each way trips to go fly sailplanes.

On the ranger, I honestly don't know. I'm pretty sure the ranger we are getting here in the states is already being sold overseas.
The reason why ford quit making the ranger was crash safety standards. Vehicle couldn't pass the new standards. Same with the crown Vic.
I would guess, based on other models that the ranger would not come with a long bed.

Well the only to get a Ranger with a long bed will be if I opt for the extended cab.

I'm in the same boat. Want the utility of a truck. Don't want to give up daily driving manners (read: not an old POS). Don't want to have a 20 ft long vehicle. Looking at the new Ranger and Taco's. Will likely start test driving in fall or spring 2019. Sigh. I hate dealerships. They make everything so painful.

The hard part is an early model current gen F150 with the EcoBoost 3.5L makes a great case for the dollar compared to a current mid size. Not much bigger with the crew can short bed. Bigger interior. More capacity. Same fuel mileage. Lots of giddyup on the skinny pedal. Cheaper (way cheaper) on the lightly used market. Still low mileage and lots of life left.

With turbo's be sure you get clean maintenance records with the vehicle. Oil change, and quality of oil are very important with turbo engines.
And don't be fooled by EPA fuel mileage stats on a ecoboost. Most people get 13-17 mpg. My boss drives like the old man he is. He does use ac most of the time. He averages 16 mph with a 3.5 ecoboost. Crew cab short bed.

@choneofakind. I too am having the same dilemma of do I get a mid-size for for the mpg and driving manners or for in some cases about the same or a little more money for a full size??? I also hate the sharks that start to circle you when you pull into the parking spot. To avoid that, go to the dealership on a Sunday and you can look at all the vehicles and read the window stickers at your leisure.
@gantt again thank you for your sage advice. The eco boost on paper sounds great but I’m vary wary because I have heard horror stories about turbos blowing up.

I have a 3.5 crew cab ecoboost, but I have the extended bed, and am thankful for it everyday I load the bikes. Right about the gas mileage, get 14 with the stock tires. Upper 12s with the 35s.

You old people and your worry about turbos on stock vehicles. They're no better or worse than industry standard across other modern vehicles with or without turbochargers. And just like any other engine on the market right now, if you start messing with engine management via an aftermarket ECU or piggyback ECU, those odds of failure do go up. That's why modifying your car voids the warranty for the parts you touch and/or impact. Just saying... Keep it stock, follow the maintenance plan, use the vehicle within the defined usage (don't pull 20,000 lbs with an F150, duh!), and anything you buy should last you a good long time. If you modify or abuse your vehicle beyond what it was intended to be used for, understand that you're more likely to see issues. That's how it works.

That 3.5L is a beast of an engine and it pairs well with the high gear count tranny's because of its flat torque curve which gives flexibility for programming shifts and power delivery. I'm not normally a Ford fanboyyyyyy (Found On Road Dead, much? ) but I do like the 3.5L EB setup they have right now.

Definitely definitely check out the Colorado/Canyon twins. I did some test driving and was really surprised with the results. I ended up bringing home a shiny new Colorado ZR2, I was really disappointed with the Tacoma.

We traded a Tacoma for the GMC.

Mileage for our GMC is better, insurance about the same, we can haul more in the GM (shorter bed on the Tacoma), both had 4x4, Gmc has V8 and Tacoma was V6. We bought a left over so we got a good deal on the GM.

This year, 2019 looks like I have decided upon the Chevy Colorado, V6, crew cab with the long box.

Sweet! Congrats!

Be warned... the headlights suck really bad.

Oh no! In what way do they suck? Poor visibility down the road?

When it’s dark and rainy outside and you have someone (anyone) coming towards you, you lose all sight of the lane lines. It really sucks, even when they’re aimed up a little (still within the DOT mandated aim height)

The Miata has LED projectors retrofitted into the stock housings, but they’re only 23” off the ground. It has better lighting and I prefer it at night. That’s sad.

I did a google search on Colorado headlight and there are lots of aftermarket replacement headlights.

Yeahhhhh... not sure any of the aftermarket housings are actually any better. Typically good output is given the back seat to looking cool for aftermarket headlight housings.

Retrofit. There's a direct swap kit out there that doesn't require baking and removing lenses if you already have the version with the projectors.
