New Ninja EX250R E-1 owner/racer

Hi all,
I recently picked up an original 1986 EX250R E-1 that am going to fix up for a racer, I currently race a 1989 VTR250 Interceptor against all of the new/old Ninja's at Nelson Ledges race track, and it is very competitive with the latest 300's and CBR's also. The older EX250F models, are actually the fastest ones. I think this bike will be a little rocket ship when I get done with it! I plan on modifying a 2012 2-1 header, replacing the smallish head pipes with some 1 1/4" o.d. tube bent to the same specs to fit, and also mount 17" wheels on it. Currently, I have an EX500 gen2 rear wheel, caliper and bracket installed and it fits Perfectly! Now, I have to decide how to mount the EX500 front wheel, which 'may' be more of a problem, as the speedo drive is not on the same side as the rotor... I have been thinking of just swapping the whole front forks off of a 94-09 EX500, and that should remedy the problem... I don't race WERA, so I won't worry if it is legal for them, or not. It is going to be a fun project for the winter!
Anyway, I am glad to be a member of this forum, and if I can be of assistance to anyone, please feel free to ask.

Thanks, Scott! I found a company in Romulus Mich. that sells/ bends thin wall stainless tubing! The stuff I want to use is only $10 per ft. and with perhaps 3 ft. total for both sides of the EX250J header, I will be able to add larger header pipes to it! I am going to run up there soon, to see what they would charge to cnc bend the two header pipes for me. There are 2 bends on the one side, and three on the other. So, it should be reasonable... lol. At last I hope so!

Hi Neil!
I see you race also, the's cool! Is that a Honda CBR600 F2/F3 you have? They are really good handling track bikes!! I grafted a CBR600F1 Hurricane front fork and wheel on my VTR250, as I needed 17" wheels front And rear, and used the VF500 triples so the fuse block and ignition switch would mount the same as stock... if you didn't know it, you would think it was a stock front end on it! But that gave me some great traction along with the 1990 VTR250 rear wheel and swing arm! I am using a 1995 CBR600F3 rear shock modified by Jamie Daugherty for clevis, and re-valved and sprung by him also. It works well! He did the front forks, also, with cartridge emulators and .75kg springs. That bike will out-handle just about everything out there! Now, if I can gain another 3 hp. this winter... (lose 25 lb.) I will be doing well next spring!

Hey Charlie!

Welcome to the Ninjette forum. I'm working on my 250 that I traded my SV to Jeff for. First project is installing fork cartridges from a CBR600F3. Hopefully I'll be done with all the race prep before the first Motoseries round!

Those first generation 250's are the coolest looking

Hi Timm!!!
Nice to see you on here too! I think it is goin to be an awesome bike, I have an EX500 17" rear on it now, not too much trouble. The CBR600F3 cartridges, are they going into the Ninja forks or are you transplanting the whole front end? Let me know!

I'm working on putting them in the Ninja forks. Trying to keep it supersport legal for now. It'll take a little bit of machining but I think the results will be good.

Welcome! You're the fourth guy in recent months to start a pregen race bike build. I'm excited to see how they all turn out. Good luck and start a build thread when you can to keep us all updated.

Cool! If you ever get to Nelson Ledges, that's where I race at primarily, perhaps at Pitt Race, or at Mid Ohio during Vintage bike days. I heard that there may be a couple new tracks to race through Moto Series this next season , but nothing concrete yet. Be glad to meet you Snot and Al!

Vintage days will be the mostly likely place. We try to get to Mid Ohio every year, didn't make it this year.
We use to go for the AMA races.

I raced the VTR250 at Mid Ohio this year, in the GENX LW and the STARS LW, it was a blast... they consider Ducati 900's lightweight hehe... but I did beat a Triumph 900 in the GEN X race! They have some good shots on the AMA gallery of all the racers, including the VTR250! I hope to have the RD350 ready for next year's Vintage bike days.
