Saw a 250 on my ride this morning. I waved to them, they didn't wave back. I'm never waving to that guy again. I've never been so intimidated.

Just be friendly and assume the best. I got mobbed by a group of about 6 Harleys yesterday, turned around and gave them a wave, got a thumbs up back! They followed me for ~10k before turning off.

Had my first ride on a "big" bike this week (Yamaha 950 at a dealer demo). Folks like it but my heart sang when I switched to a YZF-R6. All the big bike riders were great folks and didn't bug me about my "little" 250. Most of us just like to get along.

Here's the thing.... Jeep Wrangler people have a "wave" too. Each time you pass you give them that hand on the wheel fingers up wave. I've enjoyed that comraderie crossing the country on vacations with mine. However... it is so watered down by "urbanites" buying the Wrangler that hardly anyone waves anymore.... "posers" to be sure. No idea of the "wave". I'm finding this to be true with the increase of new "poser" riders whether it be scooters, sportbikes or hog type people. True blues wave... posers look straight ahead and are totally unaware. I passed 5 today and only 2 waved. Balance were Urban Posers to be sure. Alas we are being watered down but I still initiate the wave and know I'm having a great day anyway..

waving...
Funny thing, that wave...
I usually wave to everyone, including scooters (my wife refuses to wave at scooters for some reason... So I make sure to especially wave at them when we ride together :P) BUT, if I'm on the freeway, I don't wave. Too busy watching cars. If I'm on the outside of a 4+ lane road, and your on the other side, I don't wave. I probably didn't see you all the way over there... And there's more immediate things I'm looking at (blind driveways! Yikes!) Also, occasionally, I'm working the clutch slowing down at lights. I still try to nod, though, if I see a bike. So, if it was me, sorry. I do try my best to wave :P |

I think Harley riders are to busy swinging from and "playing ape" on the handlebars that they can't afford to let their arms down to wave one for fear of "wheel wobble" and laying it down

this is turning into another waving thread. On that note...I just thought about the NE group ride this month. I'm guessing any cyclist on the road at the same time we are is going to see alot of hands from our group.

Back to the OP's topic...
Vive la difference! I have a sort of personal motto: "Embrace the weirdness." I LIKE being different. I LIKE "odd" stuff and I tend to naturally seek it out. Last weekend here in Connecticut was beautiful, so I went for a drive through the countryside. There were so many Harleys on the road it was ridiculous. They're like the ubiquitous SUV. So much for "individuality." Pfeh. I decided years ago that I was comfortable enough with myself to make my own choices using my own standards and to heck with what others think. Those idiots probably think that big bikes are sexy. Horsehockey. Confidence is sexy. Intelligence is sexy. |

Today was at a few stops with a CBR1000, guy with a girl on the back, they had jackets and helmets, but jeans and low sneakers both. I was pretty much in full gear.
I could feel their eyes on me probably thinking, "who is this guy kidding" but after getting a look at their tender little ankles i could not help but think how easily they could be flopping down the highway...unattached. delicious! |

What is your answer when people (your friends or non-bikers) start asking questions, trying to make you feel bad? questions like:
When are you going to buy a real bike? I know there are some great phrases like: "It's not what you've got between your legs, but what you're willing to do with it'. But it would be nice to expand my set of witty come-backs

When you inevitably see one of them crashed and bleeding on the ground, just pull up along side him, stare at him, rev your engine a few times and take off.

or you +1 that, and you help them. this will show them that gear is important, that you are in fact a good person, and hopefully that they should be a better/more aware person. Maybe they will then spread their experience...hopefully causing others to reconsider too

I didn't read all the posts but i can tell you i've had the same thing.. on my zx14. It's not the bike you ride, its how they think they're the baddest mofos out there on a bike. I've been rev'd on, stoppied next to etc etc.
Once i had a guy on a gsxr1000 pull up next to my STI at sheetz and asked me if i wanted to race for pink slips. I told him i would love to as long as i picked the road. He looked really confused and just left. |

I think a lot of people on this forum have misconceptions about larger bikes... The bikes aren't the issue. If someone wants a Hayabusa, get it. If you're getting it for the wrong reasons, then yes, thats the issue. The people are the issue. Not the bikes.

You did the right thing to just ignore them at the scene. I wouldn't worry about it. Just be glad you have a bike I guess. The time will come when you want to get a more powerful bike. And to be completely honest, Hayabusas don't even look that great.

I agree. Some peps are just dicks, doesn't matter what they ride. I've ran in to plenty of SS jerks, Harley jerks, and er, well, never found a Goldwing jerk, bahah, but really there are all types of peps out there, too bad we all can't all connect because of the 2 wheel thing, but oh well.

Sorry, one more thing. I can buy most any bike I want many times over. I pick the bike I like, screw what others think. I also hang with the peps I like. Been on the Goldwing sites and Harley sites, but I hang here because of the people. Ok, time to flame me and tease me.... go! lol. But it's true.

Reminds me of a thread on another board about guys threatening to beat people up at the Sonic on bike night. "I'm gonna kick your ass! Just as soon as I'm done with this delicious milk shake."
