New rider, stupid question.

Hi I'm a new rider and new to manual transmission too.

Is there a rough guide to the top speed of each gear?

I'm riding around on 3rd gear and I'm doing less than 40kmh. I also try to keep it under 4000rpm like the manual says.

Do a search on "break in" and decide for yourself if what you are doing is best for your bike.

To me, lugging the bike is worse than revving it high in the early stages of life of an engine.

Best advice is to ignore the break in procedure in the manual and ride it how you feel the bike should be ridden.

Top speed in each gear is the redline on the tach. Typically, these bikes respond well to engine revs in the 6-10K range.

Good luck... welcome to the forum, mate!

the top speed in each gear is something you gotta feel for yourself. there are some instances where whenever how hard you twist the throttle, the bike wouldnt just respond as it use to be. Thats the time you gotta change gear.

there are no set rpm to change gear but if you are just cruising around, 6k to 8k are just about right. if you feel like going crazy, 12k fits the bill.

I chose to ignore the break in procedure that the manual suggested. I couldn't go the speed limit and that would irritate the cagers so i just kept it under 8k as much as possible. I am a little speed demon in disguise.

Speed in gears is as follows 1st=20mph 2nd=32mph 3rd=42mph 4th=53mph 5th=59mph Shifting at these speeds will keep the motor happy (not bogging) and leave you with plenty of room to accelerate if needed. I second the thought of ignoring the factory break-in. I use Motomans method on all my engines. Check the break-in threads here for a good guide. After the motor is broke in shifting at 9000 rpm on a regular basis makes for good fun and wont hurt the bike.
