Voltage regulator over charging

Noticed today that my regulator is over charging .I have a digital voltage meter installed on the bike and noticed today the bike was charging as high as 27 volts. At times will drop back to 14.7volts then go back to 22 to 27 volts.I wonder if that is why some of the tail lights are blowing prematurely on these bikes.I guess I will have to buy a new regulator and see how long that one lasts.Only 350 miles on by bike but is is out of warranty.I am glad I have a volt meter installed so I noticed this problem right away.My Daytona temperature gauge will be in next week.My voltage meter is by Show Chrome .

Wow! That is quite a find. I hope the new regulator fixes the issue for you.

I am going to test the regulator with a different voltmeter before buying a different regulator just in case my Show Chrome gauge has become faulty.

that's a good idea. I thought you were using a mutimeter to get the overvoltage readings.

Sorry for any false alarm I may have caused.I just tested the voltage with a good voltmeter and found the problem to be the after market gauge I thought was so good.Voltmeter showed a steady output of 14.8 volts while the after market gauge jumped as high as 17 volts.Let the bike run for 15 minutes and found no fluctuation with the automotive style voltmeter while the after market gauge showed many different readings.Off the bike and in the garbage it went.Luckily it only cost about$30.00 .
