Attention connecticut riders

I've decided I really want to do a track day next year, pending the payoff of my bike.

Let's try to get some peeps together and make it happen. Would be good to have some "known" people to hang with. Posting way early to plant the seed.

No date or location selected yet... just the intent to go do this.

It'll be with Tony's Track Days.

http://www.tonystrackdays.com/index.cfm

I know Jay (@bigballsofpaint) wants to do it.

Who else? @crazymadbastard? @parox91? @AZRider?

Cross-posting in the Rides section, but please put your responses here.

Ct/ma/ny/ri riders - 2014 track day?

I've decided I want to do a track day next year. It'd be cool to get some forum members together for this.

Who's in?

Since it's not a "ride" per se, I've started a thread in the Ninjettes at speed section. Please post there:

I'm leaning towards Thompson because it's closest.

Rumor has it there's going to be another track even closer, in Palmer MA, for 2015.

Chris, it'd be COOL to hang with someone who actually knows what they're doing at speed, but KY is a long way from here!

Yea, it's a long way but love this stuff. I should pick up @choneofakind along the way. I have no problem driving to FL for a track day, this would be no different.

Thomson is only 30 min closer for me so its not a big difference. 2.5 to NYST or 2. to Thomson.

Ive heard too many different things about Palmer, from it being car only, to wanting to be a private richy rich track.

Either way id like to do NYST once and Thomson once next year, ive heard amazing things about NYST

Sounds like fun! Last time I was on a track was Ca Superbike School in about 2002, so I am overdue!

Cost will be a question, but if I can spare the coin, it would be great!

I know it only too well. I used to do time trials in cars.

The biggest difference is that I own the bike... and it's not a track bike, which is a bit of a concern I must admit.

The plan is:

- Get the basic equipment together (suit, proper armor, trailer hitch for the car, supplies/parts to prep the bike).
- Pay off the bike before going to the track.
- Do the first few track days with the bike as it is.
- Get addicted, make the next investment... bodywork because factory fairings are EXPENSIVE
- Upgrade gear as money allows (suit and boots)
- Eventually/maybe: Get a track bike so I can stop worrying about my main squeeze. That's a tough one. Wife would NOT be happy about two bikes.

Your plan is missing a few things;

Check your medical coverage and ensure your straight and have enough.
Check your bike insurance to ensure your covered while at the track. State Farm covers non-sanctioned & non-timed/scored track events under the umbrella of "rider education".

It occurs to me that the increase in bike insurance premiums I'd suffer would, over time, more than offset the cost of repair.

TTD advises that you're probably better off just biting the bullet if you go down. I'm inclined to agree.

Hmmmm, TTD has some interesting passing rules.

I am kinda used to no rules or the 6' of space passing rule (inside or outside). Cool enough I guess, just means I will have to work harder.

Ummm, better start saving now. TTD charges an extra big face for non-member riders. If you start now, a $10 spot in a jar every now and then, it should set you up nicely by the time this event rolls around.

Depends on the damage. If the bike is completely destroyed, and it was worth $8K, it could be worth it to claim, even if your insurance does go up by $1K for 3 years. But if it's a simple lowside with a couple hundred dollars worth of damage, it probably wouldn't.

Depending on the track day org you have Loudon, nh (various pavement conditions and transitions from/to NASCAR oval, NY safety track (18 turns, awesome elevation changes, amazing traction and it opened in 2013), Thompson, CT (haven't ridden it yet as it's brand new road course opens in 2014). I think I've done Loudon 7 times now and nyst once. Nyst was longest drive for me and due to the distance might be best candidate for a two day event but with 18 turns to learn I found it to be a tiring but great day. As some say if you can ride Loudon you can ride anywhere.

Nyst has great elevation change. One hill crest will allow you to wheelie. A guy on an R1 was jumping when I was there.

TTD has most restrictive passing up here. However once out of beginner group can basically pass on outside of corners to tip in (barring chicanes) Less restrictions at nyst as the track was new to them where Loudon has been ridden so many times they have it's nuances dialed in. I posted some videos on YouTube from nyst and Loudon as gvaz and you can see good amount of passing ( or being passed ).

They are the only group I've ridden with though all the ones up here have loyal followings. Boston moto is more of an open track/ racer geared program with more open passing.

For what it's worth my friends dealership has done a deal with TTD the last two years where we were about 80-90% of the attendees and an extra unpublicized date was added for the event.

Actually track days up here are quite pricey regardless of the organization. The TTD membership does take $100 off each event with break even at five events I believe(four if you joined up last month).

Also weekdays look to be cheaper than weekends.

Heard great things about TTD, but honestly the price has kept me away. Also if you plan to go to NYST, I'd suggest you aim for an "uptown" day. You know the way the track was built to be run IMO

I did the uptown direction. Some friends did both directions and preferred uptown as well. Though I hear coming down hill on the front straight is quite exciting. For me I like the added braking benefit that uphill (uptown) gives at the end of the straight.

Any recommendations for a nyst group that might be cheaper. I think nyst themselves has a membership but too far for me to go regularly.

Tough to say right now because it seems TTD is the only one with NYST dates posted for 2014.

I personally did NYST this past year with NESBA and TPM. Both have cheap base memberships if you just wanted to do one day (should be cheaper than going to TTD as a guest). I felt NESBA ran a better show than TPM, but they have different passing rules than most (control riders that can't be passed without a wave by).

I'm personally still undecided with my track memberships for this year. As much as I'd like to run exclusively with one club, I'll probably end up riding with TPM, NESBA and maybe get a NYST membership if either of those 2 clubs don't offer many NYST dates.

Hey all,

Got pointed here so thought I'd check in.

As for passing rules, our faster groups basically have one rule - no passing from tip in point to the apex on the inside.

In other words - don't stand someone up! We want people to feel comfortable that when they are ready to lean into the corner, that no one is going to be on their inside.

Slower groups we add some additional rules - basically making the trickier sections of a track "no passing". This lets the less experienced riders concentrate on getting that section of the track "right" without having to worry about others.

Anywho, unless you are a racer that is looking for no holds barred race practice, we'll have a group that will make you happy.

As for price...

Both of these tracks (NY and CT) are very pricey. One option is to have a low price and lots of riders per group. We had some dates this year that were crowded and our regular customers spoke out and we won't be doing that again!

Beginning next year, we have chosen the other option, a higher price and limited riders per group.

Our theory behind this is that $50 or so is not a deal breaker when you consider the total cost of doing a trackday. But if you end up at a crappy trackday, with too many riders, lots of crashes and downtime - then that is a deal breaker.

In other words, if we can give you an awesome trackday experience - we think you'll remember that a whole lot longer than the extra $50 you spent.

One day or two? I will say that doing both days is the smart move and is what most of our regulars do. The price is lower, for one thing - but the best thing is it builds in an almost fool proof rain guarantee! Over a two day event, it virtually never rains for more than 1/2 day - so you get 1.5 days of dry track!

As for direction, that is up in the air. In NY, if you run UPTOWN, then you are mostly going downhill (the name uptown comes from the straight). This means you are mainly doing downhill trailbraking into the corners.

If you run "downtown", then the straight is down hill, but virtually all the rest is uphill - so you are using power to go around and out of corners.

Our logic is that if most riders are doing 2 days, running both directions provides the most opportunity for learning - not to mention it evens out the wear on your tires. (on a bigger bike, the fast riders notice that 2 days in one direction and the tires are shot because one side is shagged).

Hope that answers some of the comments... feel free to ask anything else. If I don't answer right away, maybe send me an email to remind me to check in here!

Thanks for chiming in Tony! Certainly not knocking TTD with my comments, I've only heard great things about the club.

Are you guys happy with the NYST run-off in downtown configuration? Uptown seemed just enough in certain areas, but downtown seemed worse off in this area.

Also what group size limits are your days going to have? I agree it's worth some extra $$$ to not have a group with 40+ people...

Thanks for your comments and time Tony. I am cool with whatever the group as a whole chooses. It will indeed be strange to pass a goldwing or the likes while on the track. lol But I love new experiences.

One of my tds at NYST had a guy on a BMW K1600GTL... they joked with him during tech that he better not use the speakers down the main straight

The run off in both directions could be better, but it is what it is. I do know that people can generally control their bikes better when on the gas - which you are more running downtown... which may lead to fewer crashes overall - but we haven't run enough to know.

Yes, a couple of turns are tougher downtown - but then again we are hoping that people are using trackdays to become an overall better rider.

If we do a few more days and find uptown only is the smart choice, then we'll do that - but I'm hoping people like the variety of running both ways.

As for group sizes, I'm leaning toward a max of 30 riders.
