My odometer is off!

So I just discovered my odometer is off. I got the bike and it said 3800 miles. Now it says 7300. I know for sure I haven't put more than 1k on it.

It's off by like 3 thousand miles.

What does this mean now?

It's a mistake I had the mileage wrong. So sorry guys.

I discovered that I'm only getting 24 miles per gallon is the real issue.

Yeah, 24 MPG is way off. You should be getting 50-60 mpg quite easily.

-Rode until near empty.
-Fill up again. Noted that there was 82 miles since last fill up.

Cried when I saw this #.

My 2003 Civic regularly gets 36+ MPG.

You should be doing much better!

Time for a tune up I think.

Also, confirm your Trip Meter coincides with odometer....and that your odometer coincides with true distance.

Nothing wrong with that method. If you've confirmed your odo is providing reasonable numbers, that is terrifically bad fuel economy. Something is wrong.

Spraying fuel into exhaust for afterburner effect? At worst I saw 46-48 mpg for typical riding. Sure the odo / trip meter is counting correctly?

Very common problem on pregens where people screw the top fairing bolts all the way into the side of the tank, providing a wholly unnecessary vent hole on one or both sides of the tank.

Just for reference, the odometer is hard-geared to the rotation of the front tire. On the pregens the odometer is remarkably accurate with the stock tire size (reads slightly more than actual miles by a percent or two) and pretty much dead on with the common replacement sizes. Because of the way the gearing works at the hub and in the speedometer it's pretty much impossible for it to read anything else than actual. Either it reads and it's accurate, or it doesn't read at all.

The speedometer uses magnetic eddy currents so it can be off, and usually is. The odometer and speedometer systems are completely unrelated other than the fact that the speedometer cable inputs to both mechanisms.

Or a leaking/malfunctioning petcock which was a problem on my daughter's bike.

You should not smell any gas on your clothes after riding. Gas should be staying in the fuel tank and fuel delivery system until it is burned in the engine.
