Help me pick my next bike :P

So I hit up a few dealers today and sat on a ton of bikes. First up was the BMW F800ST sport touring. This bike has the extra power, comfort, and luggage space that I want in case I ever want to go on any longer trips. I also LOVE big fat cylindrical exhaust cans so that is definitely a plus.

Then I headed over to a local sport bike dealer and sat on nearly every bike he had. I really liked the Ninja 1000. It was comfy and didn't feel too much larger than the 250. The Ninja 650r was pretty eh. I mean I guess I would like it better than the 250 because of the extra power but thats about it, there was nothing that wowed me about it.

The Suzuki V-Strom and Kawi Versys were also very comfortable. But they seemed a little bigger than something I want to ride. I'm not sure if I would truly like one or not. The V-Strom is much more attractive and I would probably pick the Suzuki over the Kawi.

I also sat on every other bike in there including a cruiser (no thanks). These were just some of the bikes that I found most appealing, I'm open to suggestion

I do know one thing for certain, I definitely do not want a GSX-R, ZX-R, or any of those supersports. Wow, those things are incredibly uncomfortable and just not practical for everyday use at all. I have no idea why anyone would want one as their main bike. I mean I could see using it for track days and such, but everyday use would be so uncomfortable.

SO! My question to you, my faithful ninjetters, is opinions on the bikes I've listed above, or why you moved on to another bike. I know I want something bigger I just don't know what. Oh and I'll never get rid of my ninjette so don't worry

That BMW is SWEET. The gs650 fit me like it was sculpted around me.

Ducati or Aprilia? Mmmm.

Btw, comfort is subjective. I find my gsxr very comfortable.

Yamaha FZ6R. Almost supersport power, but MUCH more comfortable while just sitting on it at State 8. I would assume it would be a better tourer than a supersport as well

I'd recommend an fz6 (not to be confused with the new fz6r).

If your looking for a sport tourer; mabye you should look at the FJR:

I also agree that comfort is subjective as I ride one of the most notoriously "uncomfortable" bikes every day

Are you looking exclusively at new bikes? For the traget group I would also consider a VFR800 along with the previously mentioned FJR, FZ6, etc. There is quite a spread on size between the FZR, VFR, and FJR so something should fit

Have you thought about a Triumph Street Triple (not the Speed Triple)? Great motor (675cc), relatively upright seating, nice wide bars.

oops, I see Firehorse already threw that ought there. I had a Daytona 675 for 10k miles. The Street Triple is the same engine, and it is an absolute blast to wind out. Just a much more comfortable bike.

What kind of riding are you looking to do? Long distance trips? Mostly local/twisties/day rides? Camping? What kind of storage do you want/need?

I don't have a good answer to this question. As of right now my backpack has been capable of carrying everything I've ever needed to transport (aside from pizza). Mostly what I do now is commuting, but I want a bike that is good all around. Something I will be able to take into the twisties but will also be comfortable on long multiple hour rides.

I didn't get a chance to sit on one and it is a good looking bike. The only problem that comes to mind is that I've heard that 600cc 4 cyllinder bikes have a crappy power band like the ninja 250. As in there is no power at all in the lower RPMs. I certainly won't rule out the FZ6 until I've test ridden one though

Hunched over is no bueno for me. This bike will be my primary means of transportation and a hunched over position like that will have me aching at the end of the day.

I am pretty much just looking at new bikes although if I find some used ones in excellent condition I will also consider them. I don't plan on ever getting rid of my next bike (just like my 250, I'm keeping that ho forever, gna put over 100k on her )

Big fat exhaust cans I will definitely check this bike out.

I'd prefer something a little sportier and with a windshield

I originally wasn't even considering 4 cylinder bikes, let alone a 1000. But when I sat on the Ninja 1000, it just felt right. I feel like the 250 fits me well, but the 1000 fits better.

I am leaning alot more toward the BMW. I really do not need 150hp and its nice that I can easily attach side cases to it if I want to. I also like that it keeps a sportier look vs a touring look.

Do you mean the bike itself? Same price as the Ninja 1000

I work and I have good credit.

The 650r was really not that comfortable (seat wise) I'm also not a fan of the hidden exhaust and when I sat on it, it just didn't wow me. It's funny I was 90% sure that I was going to like the 650r better than any other bike, now its at the bottom of my list.

What about a Versys? The definition of versatile at a really good price. Former Motocyclist mag bike of the year, can do adventure touring if you want to, but also good in the twisties. Would make ideal commuter bike. Doesn't have huge amounts of weight making it a pita to ride around town or off road, and plenty of power to ride highway or anything else, plus the easy ability to add luggage if you need to bring work home or head out for the weekend. 650cc really is all you need -- anything else is just a waste of weight negatively impacting ridability, imho. Mind you I've gone to the extreme on this low weight easy to ride philosophy and chosen a 250 as my commuter.

The best part is that in the Versys you'd get a motorcycle of the year for about 5 grand cheaper than the BMW you are looking at. So buy a Versys, then with the extra cash buy yourself a used V-Strom, too.

The Versys is powerful, comfortable, and capable of carrying whatever I need it to, but above all that it is UGLY

Thats why I was leaning more towards the Vstrom, it still has that appealing look that I like but it is preetty big, not sure I want something that big. Also with both of these bikes I was in a straight up sitting position as opposed to the slightly leaned forward position that I am accustomed too. They definitely aren't bad bikes, but the right bike? I'm not so sure.

I certainly need to test ride both but the BMW is still at the top of my list Unfortunately, the local dealer doesn't expect to get any in for quite some time. I see this as a good thing as I will be able to save up a bit of cash for a down payment

Funny statement considering the source.

Jiggles, I second the FZ6 as a possible choice. It won't have the peaky powerband of a SS, as it is tuned for torque and is meant for the street. The FZ6R probably isn't a bad choice, but the FZ6 is arguably the better bike, and should be less expensive to boot. The Ninja 1000 is probably a great choice. I'm debating getting a new bike myself, and if I do, I may get the Ninja 1000. I'm also looking at the Tiger 800.

I really want an R1 for that sound, but it wouldn't do me any good on the back roads I ride.

Ah ok, sounds like the FZ6 has a more appealing powerband. The Ninja 1000 is awesome, it just fits, the only thing I don't like is the lame ass exhaust and the fact that I'll get pretty crappy mileage lol.
