2014 Formula 1 - Official Thread
Here is a quick look at notable technical/rules changes for 2014
- New engine formula, 1.6L Turbocharged V6 with 8 speed transmissions - KERS upgraded to allow 161 additional hp for 33 seconds per lap - Lower nose heights mandated to increase safety and the hideous "stepped" nose seen last year is prohibited -Fuel flow restrictions put in place to promote fuel economy. Drivers also need to return to pits under their own power. - Exhaust outlet has changed to upward facing toward the rear wing to make blown diffusers much harder to achieve. - Minimum weight increased to 1523 lbs. - Midseason testing again returns. Will be held at 4 circuits following the corresponding grand prix. Teams are required to devote one of these test to helping Pirelli with tire development. - Penalty points are utilized. Any driver that accumulates 12 penalty points will be banned from the next race. - Engine limit reduced from 8 to 5 per driver for the year. - Drivers will pick car numbers to be used throughout their career. Numbers available are 2-99, with 1 being reserved for the previous year's champion (similar to MotoGP number system). - Final race of the year is worth double points. Now for the team lineups and schedules (These are still not completely set in stone and will be updated as they are announced.) Code:

Incredibly, both McLaren and Ferrari have come out with cars whose noses are even uglier than they were last year. Right proper anteater snouts.
Renault... er, I mean Lotus.... showed a block diagram of their power train, which is very cool. They appear to have eliminated turbo lag... the KERS battery spins up the turbocharger in the corner so it's already boosting when the driver punches it.

STR unveiled their car this morning. Another hideous nose.
It looks like either the snout of a tapir or a semi-erect p*nis. You decide. http://www.formula1.com/gallery/launches/2014/832.html

Winner by a nose has an all new meaning.
More galleries added, most with hideous noses. I think Mercedes and Red Bull have the least offensive. Red Bull hides the appendage by leaving it bare carbon, but there is some interesting detail there in the opening. |

First test is over. Bad news for all Renault powered cars, especially for Red Bull. Guess that's what testing is for though.

What is it about the rules this year that now favors cars with these appendages?

Safety reasons. Reduce the risk of a car flying into the air if it rear ends another and reduce the risk of injury to another driver in a T bone crash.

As I understand it: 1) Back in the day, Colin Chapman revolutionized aerodynamics when he created the first ground effects car. 2) Everyone started making them and speeds got scary. Safety suffered. 3) FIA did away with ground effects by mandating flat, stepped floors (not all at once, but that's what we have). 4) This made the diffuser VERY VERY important in producing downforce. It became, and remains, the single most important part of the car from an aero standpoint. 5) The prime aero objective became flow management around the rear of the car. 6) The aero boffins realized that a high nose made it possible to manage the air going under/around the car much more effectively. The higher the nose, the better. The top of the nose doesn't matter all that much.... the underside matters a great deal. 7) Taken to the extreme (a flat upper deck at driver eye height), this high nose approach created a driver safety issue, because in a T-bone the nose could ride up over the top of the cockpit surround of the car being T-boned. 8) FIA mandates lower noses. Aero guys still want as much of the nose to be as high as possible so they keep the monococque high and step the nose. Ugly. 9) In an attempt to force the designers to make more sleek noses, this year the FIA mandated a very low nose tip. 10) A wide, swooping low nose tip blocks airflow, so the less imaginative designers came up with the obvious solution... keep the chassis high to allow as much air underneath as possible, and make a tube that obeys the letter of the rule. That's exactly what you see with Caterham, Force India and Toro Rosso. Fortunately, most of the other teams have come up with more elegant solutions. RBR's pod is just fine. Mercedes' solution is also not bad at all. Lotus' is just goofy, but then they're always goofy anyway (remember the forward-firing exhaust?) McLaren doesn't look great in all-silver, but I'll bet that once the livery is finalized it'll look great. Personally, I think it would be easy to fix this whole mess. Everything is driven by the maximum allowable height of the TOP of the monoccocque and the nose. If you turned that around and mandated the height of the BOTTOM of the nose, then the top would naturally follow. There would be no advantage to having a ludicrously high nose anymore.

Hey, there's an idea.... rather than planning the livery, just put wet paint all over the front of the car and go for a high-speed run. Let the aero do the design! Like Flo-Viz....

Interesting. Wonder if Red Bull is as screwed as these early times suggest.

I don't think their pace is to be worried about, but the reliability issues are a bit troubling.

On top of that, the new engine packages are still a wild card. We keep hearing how Renault is having problems... but who knows how bad it really is? Might be something very simple. Might not. For that matter, the first race or three usually don't mean much either... development happens fast. Remember in 2012 (first year of stepped noses/narrow rear wings)? Mclaren dominated Australia, with two of the three podium spots... On his victory lap Button said "she's beautiful and she's quick." Alonso, by contrast, finished fifth and Massa didn't finish at all. At the end of the year, Button wound up fifth in the driver's championship and Mclaren wound up third behind RBR and Ferrari.

Not satisfied with giving their car a schlong, Toro Rosso have updated the nose to include room for the associated cojones.

Yeah, they sure do sound strange, don't they? We'll get used to it. These are not the most bizarre cars in the history of F1... far from it.
It was cool seeing Alonso lay down a huge black mark as the torque got away from him. The torque alone (and the driver's ability to manage it) is going to make for some interesting racing.

Kayso I just finished watching FP1.
What was interesting to me is how different the cars sound in the on-boards. Sauber is quiet and smooth. You can REALLY hear the turbo whistle on the McLaren RBR sounds raw and unrefined. I'm stoked to see Williams up there, evidently having a much better time of it than the big boys. How cool would it be if Massa became a title contender? Who knows... Sir Frank might actually crack a smile!

I was slightly disappointed to see that Vettel didn't have a car that was competitive (let alone driveable). I don't know if it was the sound of the engines or not. But they seemed a lot slower than last year. What a boon for Pirelli now that the cars do not get enough speed up to ruin their tires. IIRC - They ran 28 laps on softs!

Completely different tire construction this year.
This year it's going to be about fuel, not tires. Last year strategy was ALL about the tires. Now it's going to be all about making it to the end of the race and/or conserving enough in the early and mid portions to open the spigot for a dash at the end. Some great drives! And it's refreshing to see so many new faces doing well. Fastest lap was about 3.5 seconds slower than last year. That's not too surprising and it's due more to the aero and tire changes than the engines. We've got a lot less downforce this year and tires are harder, so it's a lot more difficult to get power down.... acceleration is slower because there's so much torque it's easy to break loose. Cornering speeds are lower because of less downforce. The cars are a lot harder to drive overall. Did you notice the tires screeching on every pit exit? I don't remember hearing that, ever before. It all adds up to better racing, because driver skill plays a greater role than it did before. They said during the broadcast that the FIA's objective has changed... for a while they were simply trying to make it a better spectacle. Now they want F1 to become the development ground for new technologies that can filter down to road cars. That's a FANTASTIC idea in my book.

I agree. The new technology is pretty amazing, and I look forward to more of it. I don't think we can judge how the season will be based on one race, but I am still excited overall.
