So it's not even broken-in yet.

I had a HS buddy that rode a KLR to Alaska from WI back in the day. We thought he was nuts, as we all rode sport bikes and couldn't figure out why he would choose a big enduro for the long haul.

It wasn't until I got older and wiser did I realize what a big enduro could really do.

I've always like the newer KLR like yours. I just heard they will not produce them any longer.

doohickey mod

the klrs have one weakness. the doohickey. this keeps the counterbalancer tensioned properly. unfortunately Kawasaki will not admit to design fault. a re fab aftermarket piece has been designed to correct the problem.
doohickey mod with torsion spring

I have heard of the doohickey issue.

Can you resize your photos? They are UUUGE and are difficult to view.

Thanks.

I had an 05. How could a bike that fat and slow still be so much fun. It's like a mystery of the universe. I asked the previous owner if he fixed the doohickey. He was like.. "uhh... the what?" Hahah.

What kind of seat is that. The seat is the most important mod. Once you have that you're ready for anything. Other fun mods: Pelican top case or ammo can panniers.

only mods are lowered seat. (prob will not need it) stock seat
crash bars and a pro circuit type 494 exhaust (not currently on bike) and new tires. will have to replace left hand cowl as it was cracked on a layover. used one on the way.

They aren't all the same, but they are usually really large - larger than everyone else's...

It's the same for me on two different PCs, so I think that's how it is for everyone.

Maybe someone else can chime-in with how they are for them.

I dunno. Almost all of your photos require panning side to side to view, but most others don't.

Post #6 in this thread is about the largest eva!

i started a test thread in off topic section. since I switch smartphones constantly maybe the camera resolution is the problem.

good to bad real quick

unfortunately my research on 1st gen/2nd gen was downright butt awful. i didn't realize this bikes have a slew of issues. mine on the way home from work blew the main 20 amp fuse. found the spare and installed, bike went into runaway starter mode. had to quickly pull the + batt cable. got it towed home.
thankfully klr has awesome guys and awesome forums. they figgered out a work around or repair of everything.(kawasaki should have recalled alot of it)
anyways i stripped the klr down and started the hunt. bypassed neutral safety, clutch safety. still had no power to run/start switch. i backtracked on run/start switch and saw a wisp smoke. alas! smoke? what the hell? i grabbed the harness and found this. it was still crackling as i still had the power on. i quickly pulled battery cables and started to dissect the harness.

the rabbit hole got deeper as i waded into the harness. found out 08/09 klrs had recall on harness due to improper routing and sharp edges of frame.(enuff to cut wire easily)
wire's affected: about 14

looks like the main culprit was a non insulated connector that had 1 hot going in and hooked to 5 hots goin out. i replace it with terminal block. i used high temp tape, then wrapped with electrical tape and conduit over the top.

all systems have power now and starter turns over. still need to look and harness routing carefully.
i plan on making it a super moto bike or a replica.i want to from this:

to this:

mods to do:
* doohicky mod
*fix oil burner problem(too much directed to wrist pin, a work around has been done to divert oil to upper head assembly)
*manual petcock(non vacuum)
*thermobob mod( these bikes run way to cold causing out of round heads. this mod fixes this and raises water temp to 195f
*pull carb, shim needle, drill slide hole using 7/64" bit. drill out pilot screw cover and open pilots up.( more gas)
* remove all air injection crap
*install new uni filter and remove snork
*install tony d front fender( i love em)
*find compatable wheels so i can go tubeless.
*install hyperlite blinkers.
i removed the crash bars, they were to big. shrouds will stay off for naked look. might go with a preston petty headlight number plate in the future.
more to come

front blinkers very weak, rear normal

installed manual petcock(yes!) and thermobob yesterday. injector crap taken off and block off plate installed. front blinkers very weak, rear normal. my dumba*has to back into my nice wrapped harness and find it. not cool. could be my terminal block mod
carb pilot screw access done
snork removal done
shimmed needle with 2 washers. 1 carb is nice. waiting on air filter frame for new uni filter
kx 450 rear fender on the way

problem solved

I finished the klr, for some reason terminal block worked partially. (low voltage going to front blinkers) i used #10 red butt splice to fix issue

I love that KLX rear fender mod. The stock KLR rear fender is so ugly,
