Relocating rear blinkers

So I know this has been done to death, but I have a question about moving my blinkers to the empty pods on each side of the brake light.

Do you guys pull the socket out of the old blinkers and use that? Or buy a new bulb socket to install in the new pod? I'm having a hard time pulling mine out, and wanted to know if you're better off just purchasing new ones

I installed LED lamps as turn signals in those spots but wasn't happy with the visibility, so I connected them to the brake light and mounted separate signals. They look great as brake lights when they come on and suddenly make the tail light look larger.

Another possible consideration is that signals in the empty tail light spots aren't legal because they don't meet the DOT minimum distance between brake light and turn signal light.

So they are blanked off in some countries becausev5hey do not meet light spacing or visibility standards.

Not sure about your GPZ, but the ZZR just uses painted over orange lens for the blanks, so if you move the bulb holder to the fitted internal reflector & get it mounted correctly, then you can use some fine wet & dry sand paper to remove the paint from the blank. This will leave a dull orange finish, but clean it up & spray it with a couple of coats of lacquer & it comes up perfect.

You’ll know if your blanks are lenses, because they will be orange inside !

Have fun.

I used sockets similar to these that I had laying around from old car tail lights. They were just right to snap into the holes, I have them hooked up as running (tail) lights and turn signal lights.

I haven't been able to find anything about a legal distance from the taillight, just as far away as possible, and that leaves alot to interpretation. I ordered some sockets for the blank holders, I'll post results when they get here

This will help, even though it’s talking about putting brake lights in there it’s the same general procedure.

https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/I_want...y_rear_sockets

I did this a long time ago, and I’ve had no problems with how they operate. Did it when I was very new to working on bikes (and cars) and it went smoothly.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been riding my Ninjette all over Ohio for the past 9 years with the rear lights set up this way, and the police have never given me any grief over it. And yes, I’ve just happened to have a police cruiser behind me in traffic many times, and I’ve never been stopped. However, YMMV.

Look up DOT FMVSS#108 and in California, CA ADC § 699. Front & rear separation should be at least 23". Bikes after 1973 are 16" apart. Rarely would you ever get cited, but I have. Also got ticket for riding with high-beam when my low-beam burnt out. And written up for too-loud exhaust. Ironic since cop's Harley was louder than mine.

Having said that, my pre-gen has turn-signal in empty side-pods too. We'll see how long I get away with it. > Gonna get some clear-lens and put amber-bulbs in so at least they're more distinctive and intentional as turn-signs.
