Hey give it a shot.
Got a link to his thread by chance? I tried a few search terms, but either I got a zillion results, or didn't find that particular thread.

On another note, when I opened the tops of the carbs, the right one was torn, and the left one was shaped like a flower. Would not fit back into its grooves. So I boiled it in hot water for about 12 minutes and it shrunk back down and fit.

EDIT: Not sure why my pictures get uploaded sideways.

Possibly the result of a solvent attacking the rubber and making it swell.

Never had an issue with the Mikuni carbs coming into contact with carb cleaner. Keihin must use a lesser grade of rubber or something? And it only affected one diaphragm and not the other?

Not necessarily a lesser grade, rather a different type possibly. Maybe carb cleaner just got to one of them. I don't know, I'm just speculating.

So putting the new diaphragm onto the slide was easier than I expected. Put the carb back together and the problem persists.

What's happening is only the right cylinder is firing. Figured this out because the right exhaust pipe is getting warm while the left one stays cold. When I get the bike to idle, I can smell what I think is raw fuel coming out the exhaust pipe. Wondering if maybe I have spark issue and not fuel.

Easy enough to test for spark.

1. unplug right spark-plug wire
2. shove extra spark-plug into wire
3. lay on top of engine so case of spark-plug is grounded
4. crank engine and see if spark jumps gap in plug.

Might want to do left side first as control test.

Finally figured it out. It was a spark issue. Took the left plug out and put it on top of the engine. It would fire intermittently, and then not at all. Tested a new spark plug and it fired every time. Popped the new spark plug into the motor, and fired right up! Let it warm up for a little bit and took it on a ride. Did great.

When I buy a used bike that has been I first test for compression and spark. Also look for rust in the tank.

Pay the guy and load it up.

Get it home and remove the cabs for complete dissembling, ultrasonic bath and complete rebuild.

Then I start it up.

Starting is the last thing I try once I know I have spark, clean fuel and clean carbs.

This method has yet to fail me.

You can rant all you want about carbs. If you got them you are stuck with them or you can sell the bike and move on.

Appreciate the heads up on the very small pilot orifice.

Thanks Rob for the great question as I googled it trying to figure out why my pilots had no hole and I could not get my smallest wire through. I appreciated Gordons idea for the guitar string, but searching around my shop I found some picture hanging wire and pulled a strand from the braided wire which nicely penetrated the pilot. This is key to this carb. Possibly the most problematic part on this carb. It doesn't take much to plug this jet. So thanks for the post and great carb diagrams here too. Runs like a charm now.

As supplied Keihin 38 jets .38mm= .01496" inch

a .014" string is a good start at an initial poke to clear, but what about that other .00096" ? Further measures are called for to *fully* clear to spec.

Thus, i'm not a fan of using random, unknown size wire.

In the past, I've actually found stuck, broken off remnants within pilots, rare but happens.
Once cleared, I then prefer to "index" (measure) to assure jets have not been "hogged out". Rare, but also present time to time, sure enough requiring replace.

Hey, whatever works for you.

I would be curious to know what you use to "index" your jets? Clearing the jets is always my first priority. Any smaller size wire can do this job. If I was in doubt of the integrity of the passage I would normally replace the jet.
