Suggestions for Staying Warm

So about 15 hrs ago I got called into work to fix a problem with a firewall. Thought it would take a couple hours max, it was a nice sunny, but cool day. The bike is much easier to get around in town, so I rode in the 30 miles.

It's now almost 1 AM, and about 36 degrees out. By the way things are going it will be a few degrees cooler by the time I finally get to leave.

I have a leather jacket with quilted liner, winter gloves, balaclava for the upper body, and Kevlar jeans with knee armor for my legs.

Anything I can do to stay warm on the ride home?

Crumpled newspaper in jeans or jacket worth a try?

Slow down and take the side roads instead of interstate or take the interstate and be home quicker?

Newspapers; yes.
But get a garbage bag, poke a hole for your head and two for your arms. Put iron over everything including the newspapers but under your jacket. Trust me; it works

Edit: Iron? Where the heck did that come from Lol! "it on". As in "Put it on over..." Should make a lot more sense!

Swing by a grocery store or other place with a first aid aisle, and grab some Hot Hands or ThermaCare patches. Works great for feet, legs, stomach, arms, hands, where ever you need to stick them.

As far as ride fast to get home quick or slow to lessen the cold feeling, I opt for slower

Look at the bright side.

You're unlikely to get sleepy on the ride home.

Let us know how it worked out for you... I find the key spots are neck, fingers, knees and toes. On cold days when the fingers get bad I stop and put my hands on the engine for a minute to warm up.

Good hot tea/coffee before you head out, cooked breakfast when you get back in.

Upper body sounds like it's covered, I'd be inclined to put something between the tank & your legs, sitting with your legs around a cold tank of fuel with no insulation is no fun

If you're stopped hands over the front where the radiator wafts warm air or on the engine/exhaust for a couple of seconds (as long as you're in leather gloves, the exhaust can get hot enough to melt textiles)

Not necessarily. This is my biggest problem when the weather turns. If I get cold, I get incredibly tired.

I think I'm part bear. Zzzzzzz

Left work at 5 am, made it hame by 530. Wasn't comfortable, but wasn't too cold either.

Something between the tank and legs would have been good.

I rode once at 36 deg. on the highway for about 40 min. I had on leathers with under armor and still was very cold.
I also rode in 34 deg. on the highway for about 40 min but had on textile, with a hoody, and 2 under shirts. still was very cold.

now I don't ride if it's under 50... That's how I stay warm.

You can take more cold than you think. ijs

I talked my wife... a VERY, VERY, VERY fair weather rider backpack into riding to Louisville, a 2h ride in 38 degree weather.

She lived to tell the tail, but I was in the dog house for 6 months. hahahahahahah

Coldest I've ridden in was 19*. Made it about 100 miles before walking into the nearest Subway and asking if I could just go swimming in their soup pot.

They said no.

I've been down to 17 degrees, no electrics. It was ok, I had my neoprene face mask, leather gloves, and rain pants over my jeans/long johns.

I was cold but ok.

I now have good gear, and the ability to use heated gear if I buy it.

My daughter road her Ninjette home from college in the end of November 2 years ago. It was sunny but 13'F. She made about half of the 102 mile trip. The gas tank cap lock was frozen (she now carries a small can of WD40) as well as the ignition.

lucky I was coming home from deer hunting and was about 45 minutes behind her. we traded off and I rode her bike the rest of the way home in all my camo hunting gear, and her waaaahhhhyyyyy too small pink helmet crushing my head. She road in the heated jeep.

the things we do for our kids.

Tyvek suits. We use them for anti-contamination, but they are amazingly warm. wind proof. and I can get them in 6XL so they fit over the top of everything. the material is super thin so it doesn't take up much space. I have one in the trunk of the car in case i end up in the ditch on a winter night. The ones I have are full body with hood and boots.

Now, I know that scarves are a big no-no on a motorcycle, see:

Link to original page on YouTube.

But, the amount of warmth retention you get with a scarf is just amazing. What I do is I wear it like this:

But I tuck the ends into my jacket snugly. I'm warm, and I won't get sucked into a jet turbine. Easy peasy.

Take the back roads, at stop signs when nobody is around, or stop lights when you have a long red, get off the bike and do pushups until the crossing lane's light turns yellow. You should be able to get at least 30 in.

Then feel the warmth spread as you ride to the next one...

It got me through some seriously cold days before I learned to be prepared.

If you're rocking a full face helmet, NOJ actually makes a neat helmet skirt that I liked but didn't wear much due to getting a modular shortly after getting the skirt. Oops.

http://www.nojgear.com/Quiet_Rider_C...t_p/qr04-1.htm

They do have smaller ones for just wind protection.

My reevu helmet, clear face shield, that is not an issue. The tinted shield is waiting for warmer weather.

Its been mid to upper 30's on my 25ish minute commute on mostly interstate here. My neck and hands are my main issues. I bought this at my local Cycle Gear for 9 bucks. Solved my cold neck issue. Bought some thinnish Under Armour glove liners that fit in my Alpinestars gloves, but have not solved my cold hands issue yet.

Great idea with the hand warmers NevadaWolf !! I've had to do that before and it works great.

For future reference, you may want to consider getting heated mid-layers. Tourmaster makes pretty affordable ones and they work great! It's battery operated and small enough to fit into a small tank pack or backback.

Also, I put a Zippo handwarmer in my inside pocket and it keeps my core reasonably warm. It's much better for putting in a pajama pants pocket and crawling into bed/a sleeping bag with, though.

Yea, when i first got into this I thought the helmet that I purchased would be the be all end all but I also fog up pretty easily now. That being said, with a balaclava, i don't mind the visor slightly ajar but it is frustrating. I am looking at other helmets but I have seen reviews with similar fogging issues even with pinlock visors.

Wind protection for the hands or heated gloves!! I am assuming nevadawolf linked the glove mitts that go over the handlebars but there is also the plastic wind blockers that you can put on the bike as well.l

what's funny? You can't do 30 pushups in less than a minute?

Fogging issues:

This: http://www.aerostich.com/respro-foggy-breathguard.html

+ this: http://www.pinlock.nl/home/

+ no cover on the bottom of the helmet = fog free. Certified down to -17F by myself, not sure about any colder.

I don't know when the last time I tried to do a push up was.

I might be able to do 30, probably not.

Your expectation of many people's fitness level is pretty high.

It begs the question: how many push-ups in a minute is the correct number?

We look forward to your personal video reply!

No, cause the OP was asking for quick solutions that night.

Handlebar mitts, I found mine at an ATV store.

For realz? wow! My bad...

OK, let's make this easy. Forget pushups.

20 jumping jacks in a minute should be do-able and will get you hella warm!

I think the only time I have ever done exercise beside the bike was in the middle of freaking nowhere in Utah, during March, and my jacket plug was broken. Pulled over and did about five really bad jumping jacks in full gear. Decided I would only end up only hurting myself and went in search of cocoa.
