Ducati Monster = project time

Came across a Craigslist add that I couldn't pass up: Ducati Monster (Dark Edition) w/ 900 miles. Bought it from the original owner who dropped it going 15mph. Picked it up for only $500.

It hasn't been started in 7 years so its going to need some minor engine work to get it going. Will also need some cosmetic things (new gas tank, new tires, new muffler, turn signals, etc.).

Will be keeping the 250 until I can get the Monster street worthy again. Hoping to have it all put together by next Spring.

Dang the red votes are overwhelming! I honestly hadn't considered red since everything else is black... But since I need to paint it anyway who knows.

I totally agree on the exhaust pipes. Not sure what to do to not make them less bulky.

Good call.
and as for the pipes, see if you can find any aftermarket ones, if not, you could look into fabricating your own

The seller got 30 emails within the first hour of posting and I just happened to be the first guy to email him. He realized that he set the asking price too low but wanted to give me a chance to buy out of respect to the first contact. If I wasn't going to buy it he was going to repost in a few weeks for 2-3X the price.

I honestly didn't have the money at the time so basically put it on a CC to pick it up. I have been shopping for a good motorcycle project but thought it would be an old pre-gen or something because of my limited funds. Never thought it would be a Ducati

Ok you guys asked for progress pictures... I don't have much to show but I am sure doing work. Here was what I have done so far:

-Purchased a new gas tank. Currently at the painters to have it prep'd for paint. Not sure on the color yet but it won't be black

-Installed clip-ons which you can see in the pix. Love the look and feel.

-Picked up a new headlight from a KTM Superduke. Going to retrofit it to the monster.

Nice deal

Do something cool with the exhaust. Monster's are such cool bikes aside from that fugly pipe that comes stock.

I 100% agree. If I had a spare $1.1K I would plan to get some Quat D goodness like this:

My plan at the moment is to just cut down the stock pipes. They don't look as bad if they are shorter.

Thanks for the feedback. I know the headlight isn't for everyone. Going for a different look on this bike (cafe meets naked streetfighter). I am really hoping it all comes together at the end.

I think I used that hammer to "convince" the headlight bracket to come loose. Nothing but love and attention for this Monster.

Milestone Achieved! I was able to get it to fire up! I have some idle things to work out, but at least it will run with some throttle.

Got the bike put together today and put 30 miles on it this morning. Couldn't be happier with the bike. Its a great step up from the Ninja 250R.
