Weird issue

I was riding the bike today and when I was riding at 45mph in 6th. Just cruising it started to lose power then it died. I didn't see anything wrong, I went to turn it back on to see if I could hear anything it fired right up. I let it run for a little bit with choke took the choke off rode it for another 5 minutes then same thing.
Once I got it back home I took the whole thing apart cleaned the carb with brake cleaner, checked hoses no cracks or none that weren't connected. Check the spark plugs( a little black towards the threads and white on the top).
The small idle Jets wouldn't come out So I just soaked them several times with brake cleaner to make sure they were clean. Didn't see any gunk or anything out of the ordinary, I soaked every piece with brake cleaner to try and get anything stuck in there out.
I put 230 miles on this bike since I got it and it didn't start acting up til now.

Another thing to check would be the gas tank venting and drain holes/hose.

If the tank can't vent properly it is known to vapor lock and stall the bike. And if the drain hole or drain hose for the cap is clogged, you end up with water in the gas.

Hopefully its that easy for ya.

Also check the screen on the petcock inside the tank to be sure it's clean, may have to flush the tank if there's rust or other contaminates in there slowing the fuel flow.

Also, the little internal fuel filter inside the little black elbow where the main fuel line attaches to the carb. Lil guy is easy to forget about.

Ok I'll drain the gas and try and clean everything out of there, the fuel tank looks clean, nothing out of the ordinary. Might be a clog somewhere in there. Might be Time for a new fuel filter.
I did put seafoam in there when I first got it to make sure I was cleaning everything too.

My daughter just had this happen a couple weeks ago. Everything seemed fine, but it would go a few minutes and quit, like it was out of gas. The fuel filter was clogged, even though it looked fine. This is a 2005, and I had added an inline pleated paper filter. Very fine silt had clogged the paper element, even though the filter generally looked pretty clean. I blew some fuel through it backwards a few times to flush it out, and we went on our way. A new filter is in the works.

You didn't say if yours is newgen or pregen 250, and as I understand it, the pregens didn't have filters, but newgens have them in the fuel lines, kind of hidden at the carb inlets.

Has someone installed an inline filter?

I'll have to double check. I'm just going to empty out the gas tank clean it out and replace the hoses and see if that helps

If you don't have an inline filter, it would be worth installing one of the pleated paper type. I avoid the sintered metal type ever since I had a chunk of dirt get though one and get stuck in a main jet.

Ok so with more research I found out it could of been an excessive amount of vacuum build up in the tank since it was 100° that the bike was sitting in for a while.
Didn't know you needed to let the tank vent for a bit.

If the cap's vent is working properly, this should not have happened. If it's clogged, it could happen. If, when it quits, you open the cap and hear air rushing in, you know the vent is clogged.

I did the vent cap removal to see if that helps. I got it fired up but need the choke on or else it dies. Don't know if it's because I just cleaned the carb

I forgot I accidentally adjusted my idle screw when cleaning the carb so all I did was turn it right until I was able to take the choke off, it was sitting at 2500 rpms lowered it until it was at 2k drove it back and forth until it warmed up approx 10-15 min the re adjusted it. Turned it off and it fired right back up. I think maybe the first issue I was having was the tank was venting properly.

Ok guys, just a quick question. Can I remove and disassemble everything like the petcock and everything on the carb to clean it? To make sure the fuel system is completely clean?
Is the petcock in placement of a fuel pump or do we have a fuel pump because I don't see one.

Short answers:

1. Yes, you can remove and clean anything you like.
2. The fuel system is gravity feed, no fuel pump.

In reality, removing and properly cleaning the carburetors is not a 10 minute job, but if they are anything but perfectly clean, that needs to be corrected.

Ok cool thanks for the response. I bought a fuel filter so once I clean everything with the bike I'll keep everyone updated with any problems that may occur like which hose/vacuum line goes where and does what.

Take a bunch of photos of the hoses and anything else you disassemble, before you disassemble it.

Yeah but just in case something was never connected which is why I might be running into a vacuum problem
