Should I shim for a Yoshi slip on?

As title states, yoshi slip on and no snorkel delete.
Im thinking 1 washer each.
Has anyone still got the bag of 100?

I would expect shimming would make things nicer. I have 2 washers with stock exhaust.

mmm just my opinion, and i know it will upset some, but seems like a waste of money.

Alex, I fully agree with you that a full system and a jet kit is the way to go, but you have to admit, for those not willing to commit that amount of money into their bikes, a slipon and shimming the carbs is a very cost effective combination. Hell, I would even go further and advise to skip the slipon and just shim the needles and be done with it for pennies.

yes, either metric 3mm washers or SAE #4 washers will work.

Thanks guys, after riding again today I could feel the power droppin out slightly at times I was on steady throttle.
Definitely felt a little lean and I think the colder temps today made the condition worse.
I was hesitant to shim because she starts up cold w/ choke no prob.
Definitely gonna shim now thou

How many washers do you need?

I just put in 2 washers and started it up, start up and idle are great.
I let it idle for about 5 minutes and then i rolled on throttle it bogs down and tries to die now.
Im guessing its too rich.
Should I pull a washer so theres only 1?

And my california kleen air system is too ridiculous to figure out to remove.
Nothing like the kleen air removal threads pics.
My big hose and small hoses both have t's in them going to some additional emission equipment on the left side of the bike.

Washers were wrong size >.<
Got right ones from radioshack.
Went 2 shims each with snorkel remove and yoshi slip on.

just needs idle adjustment now

I adjusted idle and she's one happy girl now.
One thing I know, and its just because Im a pretty aware person, is that if you listen REALLY close you can kinda hear the washer in the carbs make a little jingle.

So to sum up the thread:
Dont buy washers other than the ones from radio shack.
Cali models kleen air is complicated w/ additional equipment.
I shimmed .40 (two .20 washers each carb) with yoshi slip on and snorkel delete.
Adjusted idle down slightly to 1500.

now just get a drop in k&n filter and perform the zip tie throttle tube mod and the bike will be really happy and way more responsive!!

you could drop your idle a bit more.... the FSM states idle speed at 1350 +/- 50 if i do remember correctly

Kleen system delete isn't too bad and also helps eliminate backfiring. There is a thread about CA models (mine isn't even though I live here... I "imported" my bike from MN

) Just have to make sure that you cap the right things and add the fuel filter to the right spot. Just a thought

Thanks cazper, I checked around for a Cali specific kleen air removal but couldnt find one.
Also found out that instead of juryrigging up a plug, you can buy 5mm (i think thats right size) vacuum plugs for the crankcase and airbox holes.

I was told the stock foam filter is a better filtering media and kkim advised adjusting idle to 1500 because its easier to read on the tach. Also easier to get goin in first with the slightly higher idle. Ill prob drop her down to 1400ish in a week or so once I get my first gear engagments down.

Is there any benefit if you change your stock foam filter to a k&n filter?

I heard that it's not really advisable to do the kleen air removal mod if you have a stock exhaust. What if I have a slip-on? will it do any good? is it advisable?

Filter: No benefit I am told.
Kleen air: Remove for anything other than stock exhaust of any form if you dont like the bubbling popping backfiring noise.

+1 to this, take the slip on money and save it to get a full exaust,
Slip on = noise
Full = Power

On a side note, Noise = Driver Awareness = Safety. ^_^
Sheesh, you want power you can get as much HP from snorkel delete as you can from full exhaust.
Saw the dyno maps :P
If I wanted power I'd just buy a bigger bike

The mods I did were simply to make the bike respond/run better, any HP gains were bonuses.

Alex, I fully agree with you that a full system and a jet kit is the way to go, but you have to admit, for those not willing to commit that amount of money into their bikes, a slipon and shimming the carbs is a very cost effective combination. Hell, I would even go further and advise to skip the slipon and just shim the needles and be done with it for pennies.
