This is something I've wondered about, if you have a 500lb+ bike and happen to drop it while riding, I don't think you'll be picking it up with out a phone call to a couple buddies

I'm really surprised he didn't wreck his paniers or bend the brake lever. I'm not sure it's possible to drop any sort of bike without some minor damage.

IMO, the hard aluminum luggage and mounting rack for the luggage are extra weights that just make KLR an even worse dual sport ride.

I wouldn't be surprised if the KLR subframe suffer some king of damage when a drop like that occurs at speed with the aluminum case on it.
The sturdier your luggage is mounted on your bike, the stronger your subframe needs to be. AFAIK, KLR does not have a strong subframe.

I don't know much about the durability of the KLR (I think some group in the US army uses them), but they're quite fun to ride
