Proof positive that duct tape fixes everything. Glad to see he was ok.

What happened, did he use the rear brake in the curve, or was it just some sand? In any case he appeared to be pushing it a little too hard, a little too early in the ride, maybe feeling like he had to perform for his friends.

Sun glare combined with rear brake. You can see his rear tire lock up and smoke before he goes into the mountain. Might have just out rode the rear tire too and it began to slide.

Either that or a mechanical issue like tranny locking up or chain binding.

That makes sense. And it means he is way too inexperienced to be trying to ride like that. I'm really glad he didn't get hurt a lot worse.

After seeing him ride off just fine, I'm gonna say panic braked the rear because of sun glare.

I actually though he was riding a little on the squirrely side when he started off, like I think I do when I start off on the supermoto track and haven't warmed up yet. In fact last time I was at the track, I crashed on about the 3rd lap, trying to push too hard, too early. Now that I think of it, I crashed because I downshifted and let out the clutch clumsily while entering a turn, and made the rear wheel skid a little, starting a tank slapper. Pretty similar, except I had the foresight to screw up on a track, rather than a road with a cliff next to it.

I was thinking that kind of looks like Mulholland. Parts of it, anyway. Now I'm curious where they are.

Could have been sand or gravel combined with lean angle and throttle.

I have stared at his brake light and I never see it. If it was rear brake, it was still combined with sand or gravel because it obviously was not pressed enough to activate the light. However, I still think it is throttle and the noise you hear is the tire fighting for traction.

I watched it several times trying to step through frame by frame. I can't see the brake light come on. But the glare from the sun makes it difficult. Also assuming the rear brake light switch is functioning.

No I know mine doesn't... I cut the thingy off and never put the new switch on when I put on my rearsets... Maybe his foot control switch doesn't work either
Watching dude crash a few more times

It's likely. Mine isn't connected either. I have vortex rearsets and I'd need an adapter, but since it's a track bike who cares. The way his rear tire skips out so suddenly leads me to believe the tire locked up. The white smoke further leads me to that conclusion. I don't see a 300 spinning up the tire enough to make it smoke that bad.

That's what leads me as well to believe it's the brake rather than spinning under power. The bike wouldn't step out like that even if he rolled the throttle on full.

I don't think the rear locked for some other mechanical problem, it's just too unlikely (and it worked afterwards, right?). I think the new rider is riding with his foot resting on the rear brake, and he doesn't realize how much pressure he added when the sunlight & turn spooked him. The bike was already leaning enough that after lockup, it stepped out quickly.

Isn't it useful to see rear brake lights on the track?

Quite the opposite; you're required to disable / cover them with virtually all track organizations.

First few times watching it I was looking for brake lights.

Just watched it again and I agree, that white smoke and the way the rear tire acts sure looks like it locked up.

At about 2:30 rider #3 warns rider #1 (who has returned to the scene) to "watch out for the gravel", could be rider #2 hit said gravel and slid out.
"Smoke" from the tire looks like dust getting kicked up to me.

Slo-mo at 2:20 too.

Like Z1R rider said...

It's obviously easier to just blame some gravel in the road rather than your own mistake, but that could also account for a little dust cloud (some of the "smoke") too. The lead guy coming back at 2:30 jokingly says, "Watch out for the gravel!" It's possible he saw and avoided it, or he could've just assumed that's what happened. *shrug* I don't see a brake light, but the sun completely washes out the taillight at times too.

If it was simply hitting some gravel, then I guess the lesson to be learned is to keep an eye out for hazards on public roads. If you're riding at a level where you can't adjust for unexpected items in the road, you're just begging for something to pop up and get you.

Like this.

P.S. WTF?

Or the gravel could now be on the road from the rider hitting the cliff.

Like airplane accidents, motorcycle accidents often have more than one contributing factor. Yes - there may have been gravel on the road, but any rear brake pressure would then make it more likely to happen exactly as the video shows. If there was no braking or at least smooth braking front/rear at that point, the front and rear would have slid much more similarly (and more controllably) than what we saw. What the video shows is that while in the turn, the front didn't budge but the rear locked and slid out immediately, so they behaved very differently, even if hitting the same potential gravel patch.

Around here, if you assume a turn is clear but can't see all the way through it, you might easily come across a tractor pulling a tobacco wagon at 8 mph, or two pickup trucks stopped in the middle of the road, driver to driver, talking, or a 1/2" thick layer of grass clippings, or sand that washed out in the last rainstorm. As safe as riding out in the country where there are few cars seems to be, there are still plenty of things waiting to kill you if you let your guard down.
