Come on up for the 23rd. Is your buddy Eddie or his son going?
Eddy finally got the Pangale straightened out so I told him it's time for the track but I don't think he'll ever go. He too embarassed to know he's slow. Besides, he'll never get a helmet much less leathers.

I'm still recoverying from a party in Boston last weekend. If I can put it together I'll be up there. How many spots are left?

I plan on talking to Tony about a group rate for Ninjette Forum members at all events we can get a minimum (up to negotiation) number together for the trip. I like the idea of a bunch of us meetin at the NY track next year and we will see how many commit to going to see if we can get a discount/group rate. Tony does not seem to have much trouble selling out and filling the grid so he may not want to do anything but it cant hurt to ask. I would bet we would have a better chance if the group wanted a discount on memberships over single trips.

I love TTD but its much cheaper to go straight through the NYST group, like hundreds cheaper. I will more than likely just do that, maybe we can just get a group for that, i see no issue if we plan far enough ahead.

And by hundreds cheaper, you could ride this entire 3 day labor day weekend for 360....

Discount prices rule especially when you have 2 riders over multiple days add fuel and hotel (wife insists on showering) and other expenses. I love riding at the track but it should not cost $3500. I will still talk to Tony but I can't see him giving too much of a discount since he sells all his spots out at full price. We can look for cheaper track time and I hope we find it!

Jay, I was just on the NYST site and don't see where you're getting 3 days for 360.

You MUST buy a membership for $49. That gets you a per-day price of $180. If you spring for their "red zone" membership ($199) you get a whopping $10 off the per-day fee.... so you'd need to ride 15 track days for that to pay for itself.

$180 x 3 plus $49 means the entire 3-day weekend is $589. A long way from $360....

Basically you get the same price as Tony's member price, which is also 180.

On their FB page they did it for labor day. I didnt mean its a normal thing, they just had a sale for it. 180 for 1 day, 300 for 2 days, and 360 for the holiday weekend.

Even at 180 a day, im still saving money with the 49 membership just on 1 day vs Tonys 280 price. Over a weekend its 100 in savings. Tonys membership is 500, vs theirs vs 50. Big difference. Tonys membership would be worth it to me just because he goes to different tracks, but for someone like Chris who may only go with us one weekend, its not worth it.

I'm probably going to go for a Tony's membership... jury's still out on that one. I need to do more research.

One item of interest: Over the weekend I was on the Palmer Motorsports site. Tony is the only motorcycle track day provider listed.

We don't know yet when/if that track will open, but if it does it'll be AWESOME and also MUCH closer for us than NYST.

Same here on the Tonys membership, we will see how money is come christmas time ( he usually drops it to 400 for like a month). Plus i have to see if they still do gear rental on a Tonys day, since thats only way ill be able to get my friends to come to one. They dont want to drop the big money (rightfully so) to go once or twice. Im hoping they get hooked at that point, but we will see.

I knew about the Palmers track, but thats been up in the air for years. Im hoping it finally gets built.

Another FYI... NYST charges $20/night for camping at the track. Can't say for sure but I believe Tony picks that up. He does for Thompson, anyway.

For the first-timer there's no need to invest in a lot of gear. You can ride in the first-timer group with textile gear but it has to zip together. Plus, of course, proper boots and gloves.... That makes it a lot more affordable and the gear is a smart investment for the street anyway.

deep down I hope it rains at one of my track days, so long as I have tread on my tires (aka they aren't slicks) I'd love a shot at a rain day, so much to learn

Not a total washout but 3 out of 5 sessions have been wet 2 with running water across the track. The 2 dry is sessions were great and I really improved but could still use a few more dry runs To really polish this turd.

Really good day riding in the wet. Lots of water every where. I really learned a lot about riding in low traction situations and i am proud to announce that i did not crash! I rode much better this time (with a little advice from Mr Fist himself) and even managed to pass lots of riders when we did have an almost dry session. Still not ready for Moto 3 or anything but moving in the right direction. Sorry but i did not bother to video any of our runs-- we had a single run with nearly dry track and i used that as a chance to warm up and relearn the track at speed. There were just no more chances to get any good video as all the rest of the sessions were on wet/drying or full down pour. I had the camera mounted but did not want to record lame video of freight trains moving at 30-50 mph around the track. Bottom line is we came we saw we swam! The fact that we rode almost every session (skipped final session --total down pour) at a decent pace and kept it up right. We practiced hitting our markers and turn in points and stayed on line. That is about all we could do with the conditions we had, even the black group was rolling slow

kayso... here's what I learned

- It is definitely worth doing a track day in the rain... but it's not going to be nearly as fun as you want it to be (at least, not on street tires). More of an exercise in survival and gently probing the limits.
- I CAN ride, and control, a big bike in the wet. As long as I'm going reeeaaaaly slow.
- The bike is a lot more sensitive to wet pavement than I thought it'd be (again, on street tires).
- The bike will speak to you. Listen to it. You'll sense low traction before things get out of hand, provided you're not going too fast. I had a fair number of squidgy events, but no really big moments.
- A lot of the skills I wanted to practice (quick flicks, aggressive body position, bigtime braking) don't come into play that much. So I came out of it feeling good that I survived, but sad that I didn't get to do what I went there to do.
- I'm very slow in the wet. Super-cautious.
- My dam helmet fogs up too easily.
- Next time the weather is sketchy, rent the garage.

So now that Mr Fist has had his chance to describe the trip (i did not want to steal his lime light) i can tell my experience. I had a lot of issues last time i went to the track and was really looking forward to this trip to work them out! I am a little glad it rained (dry would have been more fun) since it forced me to slow down and really focus on line and throttle. Last time i would get hard on the throttle from the exit of a corner run up to next turn while forcing the bike toward the mark on the track for turn entry. Since i had not finished the last turn correctly i was not on ideal trajectory to the next turn in so corrections were necessary as i approached the the next turn. This along with poor braking and a few other issues caused me to blow corner after corner. With the limited traction available i had to really focus on where i wanted the bike long before i approached the turn in point (last time i just relied on the extra braking traction) this set me up better and allowed me more time to focus on brake modulation (rather than just pulling the lever in to the bar!) which helped me set the correct entry speed (a little slow in the wet) and i was also able to smoothly transition from brake to throttle. Mr. Fist rightly convinced me to use only second gear unless necessary. This fixed part of my issue since i was shifting too often and that just added another task to the before mentioned issue with braking and getting back on line. The one (mostly) dry session we did get to ride (after a few wet sessions where I was able to practice my new found tecnique) my speed was way up VS last trip and i really felt better and a whole lot smoother! Once this all started to click i was much less rushed and faster lap times got faster, I passed more people on these few laps than I did both the last two days (at the track) combined! I was also much less tired since i was working with the bike and not fighting it as much as last time. When we went back out on the wet track again i was much more comfortable and able to hit most of my markers while riding at a reasonably quick pace. I am not saying i am fast just fast compared to my last trip to the track. I learned a lot about controlling the bike with limited traction and even had the rear slide out a little but controlled it and kept running! Dont fear the rain just use it to learn more about your self and your bike!

In other news....

Tony said during the rider's briefing that he and Ken did a test ride at Lime Rock. TTD may run a small-scale track day there.

For those in the NY metro area, that's good news because Lime Rock is by far the closest track to NYC.

The bad news is that it's not all that exciting a track... very short and mostly right turns. There is significant elevation change, however, and it's a good track for spectators.

He said the West Bend chicane probably wouldn't be used because it's actually too tight.

Only one I took.

It bucketed down like this two or three times throughout the day.

The event is still going on, so the official photog pics won't be up for a few days yet. I doubt any will look that good.

Andrew and i were always on the track at the same time and therefore could not take pics of each other. I do have a couple from the paddock and some of the standing water but no action shots.

Somtimes.... the pics are about the people instead of the bikes.
